The Tooth Hurts Movie Poster
ALL STAR SATURDAYS -  A SENSORY FRIENDLY FILM EVENT: Kerasotes Show Place Theaters, in collaboration with the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, have teamed up to announce “All Star Saturday” sensory friendly film event in Bloomington, IN on January 30, 2010.

This sensory friendly environment allows families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy family films in a safe and accepting environment.

Join us for a “Sensory Friendly” showing of The Tooth Fairy.  Sensory friendly film event details include:

  • Date: Saturday, January 30, 2010
  • Cost is $7.75 for children and adults
  • Doors open at 9:00 a.m./Movie time at 9:30 a.m.
  • All children/students must be accompanied by an adult
  • Location: Show Place - East 11, Bloomington, IN (1351 South College Mall Road)
  • Lights will be up and sounds will be down
  • Families can bring gluten-free, casein-free snacks
  • Snack bar will be open
  • No previews

DEATH BY CHOCOLATE-CRUISING FOR MURDER: Experience an interactive murder mystery evening presented by Citizen Advocacy of South-Central Indiana, Inc. and Bloomington Playwrights Project. Enjoy a delicious Lennie’s decadent Death by Chocolate dessert with tea or coffee on Thursday, February 4, 2010 starting at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Bloomington.

Board the Mystery of the Seas Cruise Liner and be ready for a night of intrigue and danger at the Captain’s Chocolate Extravaganza! Trapped at sea, no one is safe; all are suspect!! Proceeds will benefit Citizen Advocacy of South-Central Indiana, Inc. (CASCI, Inc.), a not-for-profit organization that is committed to helping people with disabilities become a more active and viable part of their community.

2010 BENEFITS INFORMATION NETWORK TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES: Vocational Rehabilitation encourages all agencies with a Purchase of Services Agreement and all Employment Networks to participate in the Benefits Information Network (BIN).  In collaboration with the Indiana Institute, the Social Security Administration, the Indiana Medicaid Infrastructure Grant, and Indiana Works-Works Incentive Planning and Assistance Projects, BIN Liaisons are supporting the employment and work incentives outcomes of beneficiaries.

Two types of training are available. BIN Basic Training is a four-day series required for first-time certification or 2nd year recertification. This training will include four full days of instruction and training exercises, competency tests, field assignments, and additional tele-training participation. All parts of the training are required for certification.

BIN Advanced Training recertification is offered to experienced BIN Liaisons who have satisfactorily performed BIN services, and who have successfully complete all pre-training assignments and proficiency tests with 80% to be admitted to the training. In addition, participation in web-based and tele-trainings will be required.

HANDLING CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS AND TEACHING SOCIAL SKILLS WORKSHOP: Students on the autism spectrum often have difficulty regulating their feelings and interacting socially. This workshop describes how to handle meltdowns and design effective behavior plans to prevent these moments and reduce frustration and anxiety. The second part of the presentation details strategies to motivate students to learn, ways to teach social skills, how to generalize skills into the natural setting, and increase acceptance and tolerance from peers.

The workshop will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010 at Fishers High School in Fishers, Indiana. Presented by the Indiana Resource Center for Autism in collaboration with Hamilton Southeastern Schools and Hamilton-Boone-Madison Special Services Cooperative, this workshop will feature Jed Baker, Ph.D., Director of the Social Skills Training Project, a private organization serving individuals with autism and social communication problems.

Registration fee is $90.00 per person. Certificates of attendance, CEUs, and CRUs will be made available to participants. BUILDING LEADERSHIP SERIES
: The Institute’s Center on Aging and Community is pleased to announce the training schedule for the Building Leadership Series for 2010. Building Leadership provides a series of three two-day workshops over a three-month period designed to increase  and enhance the self-determination and advocacy skills of persons with disabilities. 

Training dates and topics include (Bloomington Convention Center):
  • September 22-23: Choice: What Choices am I Really Making? What are My Rights and Responsibilities?
  • October 20-21: Self-Determination/Self-Advocacy: I Hear These Words, What Do They Mean for Me?
  • November 10-11: Person Centered Planning: What Does it Mean for Me and What is a Good Plan?

Building Leadership funds up to 20 participants. Funding includes meals, overnights, attendant care as needed, and a $60.00 attendance stipend to offset lost wages.

Participants are required to commit to the entire series of workshops and have the necessary staff/family support to attend and/or cover their personal business (work/appointments) while they are away.
