UPCOMING
FREE WEBINAR ON THE IMPACT OF THE SUPREME COURT’S ADA DECISIONS: When Congress passed the ADA Amendments Act of 2008, it repudiated two of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ADA decisions (Sutton and Williams). But what about the other ADA cases decided by the Supreme Court? These cases involved important issues including reasonable accommodation and seniority systems, the definition of employee and employer, pretext, the impact of qualifying for Social Security benefits, and direct threat. What impact have these cases had?
This free Webinar, scheduled for Wednesday, February 3rd from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Eastern time, will provide an in-depth review of lower court interpretations of the major Supreme Court ADA decisions that were not covered by the ADA Amendments Act and provide guidance for interpreting those issues in the future. To register, visit
http://www.ada-audio.org/Webinar/ADALegal/ (click on the “register” web link to start the process). There are a few Indiana organizations hosting the Webinar for the public. Visit the ADA-Indiana website if you are interested in attending at one of these locations.

ACROSS THE COURTYARD
DIVERSITYWORKS PLANNING: Members of DiversityWorks, Bloomington’s Business Leadership Network, used the Institute’s Collaborative Work Lab last week to develop a five-year strategic plan. After envisioning and prioritizing goals they desired to be accomplished by 2015, the group then identified strategies for reaching those goals. Their afternoon of work in the CWLab provided them with a framework of a working five-year plan designed to increase business awareness of the benefits of hiring people with disabilities and the resources available to assist them.
Some typical comments about the value of using the CWLab for this type of strategic planning included:
- “It helped us to generate good ideas, in a non-threatening way.”
- “I love that all the feedback is compiled for us.”
- “Well managed, very effective system for working together for a common goal.”
The CWLab is used for strategic planning by a variety of groups – human services organizations, businesses, city and state government, and university departments. For further information, contact Vicki Pappas, Director of the Institute’s Center for Planning and Policy Studies at
cwlab@indiana.edu or by calling her at (812) 855-6508.
ACROSS CAMPUS
SPECIAL EDUCATION RESEARCH SEMINAR: The Special Education Program, Indiana University School of Education in collaboration with the Indiana Institute, hosted a day and a half Special Education Research Seminar last week. Erna Alant, Professor and Otting Chair in Special Education, IU School of Education, organized the event. The Seminar provided a unique opportunity for doctoral students and faculty to present and discuss ideas regarding their research while interacting with researchers outside of the Indiana University community.
