ACROSS THE COURTYARD
STUDENTS CHOOSE SERVICE OVER SUNNY BEACHES: This spring semester, the Indiana Institute’s Center on Education and Lifelong Learning, offered IU students an interdisciplinary service learning course in partnership with well established partners locally and in the New Orleans area titled Voices of Katrina, Voices of Services.
In addition to a campus class schedule, the students traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana for spring break week. Students were introduced to the multitude of issues involved in the aftermath of Katrina. They traveled to NOLA to assist in the rebuilding efforts in partnership with the Little River Church, a faith-based nonprofit organization providing Katrina-affected families with affordable housing opportunities.
Upon their return, the students were required to present their final products, reflections, insights, and lessons learned to foster public discussion on issues of poverty and service. Students chose individual audiences aligned to their chosen course of studies. For information on other service learning opportunities for credit, contact Cate Hart via e-mail at
camhart@indiana.edu.
