RFF PROPOSAL ON ASSET DEVELOPMENT AND FINANCIAL LITERACY: The Indiana Institute’s Center for Community Living and Careers will distribute a Request for Funding Proposal on April 12 focusing on asset development and financial literacy for people with disabilities.

The Medicaid Infrastructure Grant (MIG) ASSET DEVELOPMENT Leadership Committee is excited to announce a new opportunity for financial stability coalitions in Indiana. The MIG Asset Development Leadership Committee is composed of representatives from the Vocational Rehabilitation Services; the Internal Revenue Service (IRS); Indiana Association of United Ways (IaUW); the Indiana Department of Housing and Community Development (IHCDA); Community Rehabilitation Program (CRPs) providers and Community Mental Health Centers; Independent Living Centers; other disability organizations; and the Center on Community Living and Careers (CCLC) at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community (IIDC) at Indiana University.

The Request for Funding will provide up to 5 existing coalitions with $10,000 and up to 2 new or emerging coalitions with $15,000 in financial support to enhance the participation of persons with disabilities in asset development and financial literacy activities as clearly outlined in their proposal and consistent with the parameters outlined in the RFF.  Funding is provided from September 1, 2010 through December 31, 2011. The RFF will be available April 12, 2010 in the ANNOUNCEMENT box on the CCLC Website at http://www.iidc.indiana.edu/index.php?pageId=18.

INDEPENDENT STUDY COURSE ON SERVICE LEARNING: The Institute’s Center on Education and Lifelong Learning is offering an independent study summer course titled Voices of Service (F401/W505). The course will focus on how service can engage the diverse needs of students by aligning with academic learning and social change.

Students will critically examine the limits and strengths of service in social change as they learn about issues of poverty – statistics and implications as related to a need they have documented. They will be able to experience a sense of efficacy as they enhance their ability to hear, dialogue, and reflect on the issues addressed.

This three credit hour EDUC course is being offered to students in all academic areas during the summer term, 2010.  Students enrolled in the class will be expected to meet with the instructor to contract for an individualized serve learning goal statement that aligns course content to individual personal, educational and career goals. The instructor will help to facilitate a service component if necessary. Outcomes include:

  • Increasing awareness of issues and resources that impact the needs to be addressed with the service;
  • Developing collaboration and civic engagement skills that connect, strengthen, and sustain social change;
  • Providing service to help address an identified need and reflection; and
  • Preparing a final product to be shared at a public forum.

After April 12, our offices will be located at 408 N. Union St., Bloomington, IN 47405. For more information on the School of Continuing Studies, visit http://scs.indiana.edu/.
