ADA-Indiana Audio Conference: Parents of children with disabilities are often faced with limited choices when it comes to locating appropriate after school and day care programs to meet the needs of their children. Some day care and after school providers are reluctant to accept children with disabilities into their programs based on the fear that they are not able to provide the child with the services that they need.

On Tuesday, August 17 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Eastern, Dr. Ruth Wolery, Assistant Professor of the Practice of Special Education at Vanderbilt University, and Director of the Susan Gray School, and Guest Moderator, Shelly Kaplan, Director of the Southeast ADA Center, will discuss how the Americans with Disabilities Act is applied to these programs. They will also present best practices and resources to assist providers and parents.

This free audio conference will be held at the following locations:

Bloomington, Columbus, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Gary, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Merrillville, Muncie, Terre Haute, Versailles, Vincennes, and West Lafayette. Visit the ADA-Indiana website for more information about these site locations. For more information about this session, contact Matt Norris at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail adainfo@indiana.edu. The Indiana ADA Audio Conference program is sponsored by ADA-Indiana, Great Lakes ADA Center, and the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities.

Help Share Indiana’s Disability Plan
: The Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities is gearing up to prepare Indiana’s State Disability Plan for 2012-2016. The completed plan will be used to guide the work of the Council, including its training and dissemination activities, the events it sponsors, and the projects it funds.

Here is your chance to participate in the process! The Council is hosting Town Meetings in eight areas of the state. The purpose of these Town Meetings is to gather ideas from individuals with disabilities and family members about the priorities that should be addressed in the upcoming State Disability Plan. To assist them in facilitating these Town Meetings, the Council has commissioned the Institute’s Center for Planning and Policy Studies.

The first of these Town Meetings will be held in Indianapolis on Monday, August 30th from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the American Red Cross, 441 East 10th Street. The Council asks that people with disabilities and family members sign up and register for this Town Meeting by visiting www.cwlab.org.
