STRUCTURED TEACHING STRATEGIES: The Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism will host a two-day workshop on Structured Teaching Strategies, presented by Catherine Davies, October 19-20, 2010, at the Indiana Institute in Bloomington.

Research consistently indicates that individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) respond favorably to a structured environment. This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of how and why to implement structured teaching strategies, such as visual schedules, work systems and deliberately designed work materials.

Day one of the workshop will provide a rationale for using structured teaching and outline of the different types of structure. Within each category participants will be shown a variety of examples (video, photographs) of structured teaching in existing classrooms/situations.

Day two, will focus on a more in-depth presentation of ways to use the strategies to accurately assess where to begin teaching, develop social communication skills, strategies for included students and to develop proactive strategies for decreasing challenging behaviors.

This workshop is geared for general and special education teachers, administrators, autism consultants, speech therapists, psychologists, and any other professionals working with individuals with a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder.

Registration fee is $350.00 per person and registration is limited to 30 attendees. Certificates of attendance will be provided for free and can be used for Professional Growth Plan points. CEUs will be available on-site. Administrative fee is $15.00 made payable to Indiana University.

TRAINING ON AUTISM CONDUCTED FOR FIRST RESPONDERS: Brian Ketzner, Family Mentor, with the Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism, presented a session on autism at the Indiana Emergency Responders Conference held in Indianapolis on August 14. The conference is a state-wide annual event organized by the Indiana Fire Chief’s Association. Training on autism is a state requirement for recertification for Indiana’s first responders.

The two-hour session covered classic characteristics of autism and suggested strategies in creating a positive interaction with individuals on the spectrum through awareness of their possible needs. The training featured a video developed for firefighters and concluded with a question and answer session and informal quiz. The intent is to help first responders recognize possible signs and to adapt to areas of communication, sensory issues, and understanding.

UPDATE - SURVEY FOR PARENTS OF STUDENTS RECEIVING SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES: It has come to our attention that the Parent Satisfaction Survey slated for distribution to the families of Indiana’s 171,000 students receiving special education services was delayed from the vendor.  Some planning districts may not have as yet received surveys. If parents have not received a copy of the survey, contact the individual in charge of special education services at the school their child attends for more information.
