UPCOMINGHELP SHAPE INDIANA’S DISABILITY PLAN – FORT WAYNE AREA: The second of eight Town Meetings being sponsored by the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities to prepare Indiana’s State Disability Plan will occur in Fort Wayne. People with disabilities and family members are invited to attend. Here is your chance to participate in the process!

The Council asks that participants from Fort Wayne and the surrounding areas sign up and register for this Town Meeting by going to the following website
www.cwlab.org. Be sure to sign up by FRIDAY at NOON, September 17th so staff can properly prepare for your participation.
Times and locations of other Town Meetings to be announced soon. They will be held in the following areas: Terre Haute on September 30th, Evansville on October 18th, Gary/Merrillville on October 25th, South Bend on October 26th, Richmond on November 8th, and New Albany/Clarksville on November 15th.
For those unable to attend a Town Meeting, there will be a State Plan Survey available for additional input. Stay tuned for more information about this way of participating in Indiana’s State Plan process! The Council has commissioned the Institute’s Center for Planning and Policy Studies to assist them in facilitating these Town Meetings and the Survey. WHEN ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS: The Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism in collaboration with the Early Childhood Center, will host a one-day workshop focusing on building understanding of how different behaviors are communicative on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at the Indiana Institute.  Â
Participants will be able to:
- Explain how behavior and communication are linked;
- Identify potential messages of behavior;
- Recognize how the “big picture” can assist in deciphering messages of behavior;
- Recognize potential hidden issues that impact behaviors;
- Describe disability issues that affect behavior and communication; and
- Plan positive behavior approaches to support children’s behavior.
Those who are early education providers, preschool and day care providers, early elementary teachers (special and general education), parents, SLPs, OTs, PTs, and developmental therapists should plan to attend.  Â
Registration fee is $90.00 per person. Certificates of Attendance will be provided at no charge. CEUs (general education) will be available on-site for a fee of $15.00 per person. Visit the Indiana Resource Center for Autism’s website at

COUNCIL FOR COMMUNITY ACCESSIBILITY SEEKS NOMINEES FOR ANNUAL AWARDS: The City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility (CCA) is soliciting nominations for its annual awards ceremony taking place at the end of October. The awards will recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that make the community more accessible for people with disabilities. The CCA advocates on behalf of people with disabilities, promoting awareness and working to develop solutions to problems of accessibility in the community.
Award categories include:
- Kristin Willison Volunteer Service Award
- Business Service Award
- Professional and Community Service Award
- Housing Service Award
- Self-Advocacy Award
- Mayor’s Award

FALL CONFERENCE – BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION: Brain Injury Association of Indiana’s fall education conference is coming up on October 14th and 15th at Valle Vista conference center in Greenwood, IN.
