ADA-INDIANA AUDIO CONFERENCE: The U.S. Department of Justice released the revised Title II and III regulations for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in September. But, as this month’s title says, they “are not done yet.” Listen to John Wodatch from the U.S. Department of Justice, as he speaks to the DOJ’s efforts to address the accessibility of web-based programs and services, furniture and equipment, next generation 911 services, and movie captioning and video description through the rulemaking process. Public comment on these areas will be accepted through January 24, 2011.

We're not done yet: DOJ Proposed Rulemaking and Update will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. at seven Indiana locations (visit http://www.adaindiana.org/audio for more specific information about these site locations). For more information about this session, contact Matt Norris at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail adainfo@indiana.edu. The Indiana ADA Audio Conference program is sponsored by ADA-Indiana, Great Lakes ADA Center, and the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities. Transcripts are available by visiting

ACROSS THE COURTYARD

Toolkit Manual Covers

AGING INDIANA WORKBOOKS: The Institute’s Center on Aging and Community has developed three guidebooks that promote planning tools for the development of elder-friendly communities. These guidebooks are written for citizen planners, activists, and professionals in aging.

The Communications Toolkit is a community guide to media communication and social marketing regarding aging issues. This publication presents strategic messages and story lines for the key indicators of an elder-friendly community. The indicators correspond to the survey instrument and data from the AdvantAge Initiative. The guide is intended to enable communities to inform and educate public groups and policy makers.

How to Develop Home Modification Initiatives guide describes how to create a community coalition to advocate for the availability of affordable home modifications for those with age-related or lifelong disabilities. Public programs and funding sources for modifications, relevant legislation, opportunities to influence public policy, and existing exemplary service models are discussed.

Mental Health in Older Adults: Improving Health, Improving Access is designed to be a tool for communities seeking to identify and address the unmet mental health needs of older adults. Citizen planners and activists as well as local professionals will learn about national research findings from the AdvantAge Initiative and find information about effective, existing evidence-based programs.

These guidebooks were made possible by the Daniels Fund and are available for free download at Aging Indiana. Visit http://agingindiana.org/index.html. For more information, contact Phil Stafford, Center for Aging and Community at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail staffor@indiana.edu.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

AUCD Logo

AUCD PRESENTATION: Indiana Institute Director David Mank and the Arc of Indiana’s Director John Dickerson, co-presented at the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) Annual Meeting and Conference held October 30-November 3, 2010 in Crystal City, Virginia.

Mank and Dickerson’s presentation was entitled Pathways to Empowerment: Indiana’s Initiative for Major Change in the Face of New Economic Realities. For more information on AUCD, visit http://www.aucd.org.

Post-School Outcomes Center Logo

FROM EAST TO WEST
: David Mank spent time in Eugene last week at the University of Oregon’s National Post-Secondary Outcome Center. David is a member of the Advisory Team whose mission is to help state education agencies establish practical and rigorous data collection systems that measure and profile the post-school experiences of youth with disabilities. The results will be used for national, state, and local reporting and --most importantly-- to guide and improve transition services to this population. For more information on the National PSO, visit http://www.psocenter.org.

IN EMPLOYMENT

100 JOBS IN INDIANA PRESENTATION: Take a moment and visit the Indiana Alliance for Full Participation webpage at http://www.iidc.indiana.edu/?pageId=7&newsId=218&newsType=0 and enjoy a presentation celebrating the employment of people with disabilities across Indiana. The 100 Jobs Campaign project provides over 100 photos and vignettes of employment success stories submitted by provider agencies. 100 Jobs was developed by Indiana APSE and first presented at the Organizational Change Forum held in September. The Indiana Alliance for Full Participation State Team is working with Indiana APSE and other state partners to increase employment outcomes for people with disabilities.

The National Alliance for Full Participation and the Indiana State Team are setting a goal to double the employment rate for those with developmental disabilities from 22% nationally to 44%. Here in Indiana, we are a little ahead of the national average (about 28-30%) according to 2008 data received from David Braddock and Indiana’s Day and Employment Services Outcome System. Indiana’s Team is promoting a goal of achieved 50% employment for people with developmental disabilities by 2015.

In October of 2009, the Indiana Commission on Developmental Disabilities adopted a resolution supporting the goals established by the Alliance for Full Participation employment campaign at the request of the Indiana’s AFP State Team. The Resolution (SCR0004) passed both chambers of the Indiana legislature in March, 2010!
