HELP SHAPE INDIANA’S DISABILITY POLICY: Add your voice! Help identify priorities for improving services and supports for people with disabilities and their family members. The Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services, and the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community invite you to participate in the 2011 Disability Poll. This year, the focus is on what should be Indiana’s policy priorities for people with disabilities.

To respond, simply go to this website at www.thepollingplace.org. If you are going to the Governor’s Disability Conference on December 6th and 7th, you can respond to the Disability Poll there, too. Just look for the tables with laptops set up in the main hallway!

The survey is also available in alternative formats. Call: 812-855-6508, Toll-free: 800-825-4733, or TTY: 812-855-9630. You may also email cpps@indiana.edu to request an alternative format.

The Disability Poll is conducted annually by the Institute’s Center on Planning and Policy Studies, under the direction of Dr. Vicki Pappas. This is a joint project of the DD Network in Indiana: the Institute, the Governor's Council for People with Disabilities, and Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services.

IRCA CONTINUES TRAINING INDIANA’S FIRST RESPONDERS
: The need for continued training for First Responders on the characteristics of individuals on the autism spectrum continues to stay in focus within the state of Indiana. Brian Ketzner, Family Mentor for IRCA, presented in Kokomo on Saturday, November 20 to Emergency Response agencies for Howard County including City of Kokomo and county dispatch.

Training topics addressed how to identify the “classic characteristics” of individuals on the autism spectrum and strategies on how to communicate with individuals with autism during a crises situation. The rising incidence rates of autism across our communities contribute to an increased likelihood of responders interacting with individuals on the autism spectrum.  If you would like more information, contact Brian Ketzner at the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail bketzner@indiana.edu.
