WEBINAR ON TRANSPORTATION ISSUES: If you are interested in transportation issues and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), plan to participate in an upcoming free Webinar offered by the ADA National Network and Easter Seals Project ACTION. Scheduled for Tuesday, December 14, 2010 from 2:00-3:30 (Eastern). This session is the third of seven Webinars on Transportation and the ADA. Each session will focus on one of the seven Topic Guides on ADA Transportation, a series of Technical Assistance publications released by DREDF earlier this year. Register for this one webinar, or for the entire series.
This Webinar session will cover the Topic Guide 3: Eligibility for ADA Paratransit. The session will first address the categories and types of eligibility, including conditional eligibility. Important best-practice do’s and don’ts will also be discussed, including basing decisions on the most limiting condition, using a comprehensive task/skill list, applying the reasonable person test, identifying specific abilities and/or limitations, basing decisions on a case-by-case analysis of each applicant, and interpreting safety issues properly. Additionally, this will address the eligibility determination process, including the 21-day process, functional assessments, the appeal process for eligibility denials, and visitors. There will be time for participant questions.

HELP SHAPE INDIANA’S DISABILITY POLICY: Add your voice! Help identify priorities for improving services and supports for people with disabilities and their family members. The Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services, and the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community invite you to participate in the 2011 Disability Poll. This year, the focus is on what should be Indiana’s policy priorities for people with disabilities.
To respond, simply go to this website at http://www.thepollingplace.org. If you are going to the Governor’s Disability Conference on December 6th and 7th, you can respond to the Disability Poll there, too. Just look for the tables with laptops set up in the main hallway!
The survey is also available in alternative formats. Call: 812-855-6508, Toll-free: 800-825-4733, or TTY: 812-855-9630. You may also email cpps@indiana.edu to request an alternative format.
The Disability Poll is conducted annually by the Institute’s Center on Planning and Policy Studies under the direction of Vicki Pappas. This is a joint project of the DD Network in Indiana: the Institute, the Governor's Council for People with Disabilities, and Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services.
ACROSS THE STATE
THE ARC OF INDIANA MASTER TRUST 2011 WINTER HEATING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: The Arc of Indiana’s Board of Directors has approved $40,000 for The Arc of Indiana Master Trust 2011 Winter Heating Assistance Program. This will allow the trust to assist 400 low-income individuals with disabilities with $100 toward their winter heating bills. Funding for the Winter Heating Assistance Program comes from The Arc of Indiana.
To apply for assistance, individuals should contact the local chapter of The Arc in their county and request a certification form, or ask them to complete and verify a form, for The Arc of Indiana Master Trust 2011 Winter Heating Assistance Program. The certification form is available on our web site at
http://www.arcind.org (click on “News and Events” or click on “The Arc of Indiana Master Trust, Helpful Resources and Links).
Application may also be made through a community mental health center, Independent Living Center, Area Agency on Aging, or a district office of the Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services. These agencies should be aware of The Arc’s Winter Heating Assistance Program. The trust wants to distribute funds as equally as possible throughout the state. Therefore, a limited number of applications will be accepted from each of Indiana’s counties.
