FREE WEBINAR ON ACCESSIBLE TRANSIENT LODGING
: The U.S. Access Board and the ADA National Network will offer a free webinar on Accessible Transient Lodging on Thursday, February 3, 2011 from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. Eastern.
 
In addition to overnight accommodations, hotels, motels, and other places of transient lodging offer many different types of amenities, such as swimming pools, fitness facilities, spas, restaurants, and conference rooms.

This session will provide an overview of requirements for transient lodging facilities in the ADA and ABA Accessibility Guidelines, including those that address sleeping rooms, bathrooms, and other spaces and amenities.

Presenters will include Jim Pecht and Earleen Sesker, Accessibility Specialists from the U.S. Access Board. The Webinar is free but registration is required. Visit http://www.accessibilityonline.org (click on the “Registration Information” web link to start the process).

IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION WORKSHOP
: The Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism will host a one-day workshop designed to assist attendees to understand the multiple developmental differences in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) that contribute to problems with reading comprehension. Effective methods for intervention specifically tailored to the needs of readers on the spectrum of all ages will also be addressed.   

Drawing a Blank: Improving Reading Comprehension for Good Decoders with Autism Spectrum Disorders, will be held April 21, 2011 at the Noblesville Intermediate School, Noblesville, IN. Registration fee is $90.00.

This workshop is designed for teachers, specialists, parents, and school staff who work with students on the spectrum. OFFICE OF DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT POLICY (ODEP) MEETING IN D.C.
: The Institute’s Director,  David Mank, spent time in D.C. last week attending a Forum focusing on Advancing Workplace Flexibility Policy and Practices, sponsored by ODEP.

Forum goals were to develop concrete recommendations for the advancement of workplace flexibility policy and practices for all employees, including individuals with disabilities. Objectives included:

  •  Create proposed recommendations for policies and best practices that support workplace flexibility;
  •  Recommend specific actions, resources, and next steps needed to advance workplace flexibility at the federal state, and local levels; and
  •  Build upon existing workplace flexibility policies and practices to include flexibility around job tasks and space and time.
