ADA-INDIANA AUDIO CONFERENCE - HOW THE ADA IMPACTS SENIORS: ADA-Indiana will host an audio conference focusing on how the ADA addressed the rights of seniors with disabilities. On Tuesday, February 15, 2011 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. (Eastern) in seven Indiana locations.
Dr. Robbyn Wacker, University of Northern Colorado, will share strategies that can be used by service providers and individuals to meet the needs, and to protect the rights, of seniors with disabilities. Site locations include Bloomington, Gary, Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Versailles, Vincennes, and West Lafayette. TEACCH FIVE DAY TRAINING: The Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism will host a five-day training for professionals who work with students with Autism, June 20-24, 2011 at the Edgewood Early Childhood Center, Ellettsville, IN.
This intensive five-day workshop combines hands-on classroom experience (including setting up the classroom for five students), lectures on topics related to working with students with autism, and group discussions of classroom activities including:
- Supervised experience in a demonstration classroom setting;
- Hands-on experiences with students with autism of varying ages and functioning levels;
- Active learning; and
- Presentations and demonstration of working with students with autism.
Registration fee is $1,990.00 per person. Attendance is required for all five days. Certificates of attendance will be provided and free to be used as Professional Growth Points. CEUs will be available on-site. An administrative fee of $15.00 will be charged. Graduate course credit will also be offered on the first day.

ACROSS THE COURTYARD
SERVICE LEARNING INITIATIVE: The Indiana Institute’s Center on Education and Lifelong Learning, has partnered with the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy (CEEP) at Indiana University and the Indiana Department of Education, to promote and support schools who have been awarded Learn and Serve Indiana funding. Together, these organizations are providing consultation, technical assistance, professional development, and evaluation services to 21 schools and other education providers throughout Indiana. Learn and Serve Indiana funding is through the Corporation for National and Community Service through the Indiana Department of Education.
The Center on Education and Lifelong Learning project staff will manage the technical assistance portion of the project with assistance from Service Learning Technical Assistants Marti Reece, Kerri Davis, and Cate Hart Hyatt. CEEP’s Dr. Mindy King and Megan Weikel will complete the evaluation portion of the project.
Throughout the 2010-2011 program year, technical assistance will be provided to Learn and Serve Indiana grantees through the following activities:
- On-site assessment and technical assistance;
- Webinars for Service Learning Coordinators;
- Regional trainings for teachers interested in applying for mini-grants and new service learning advisory boards; and
- A summer conference for school/district coordinators and teachers who wish to lead service learning projects.
CELL’s technical assistance activities will help to ensure that Learn and Serve Indiana grantees develop and implement high quality service learning projects by aligning projects with the National Service Learning Standards for Quality Practice developed by the National Youth Leadership Council. RECORD BREAKING RESPONSES TO 2011 DISABILITY POLL: The 2011 Disability Poll, Shaping Indiana’s Disability Policy, is now closed. We’re pleased to report that 1300 people with disabilities, family members, and advocates who work in the disability field responded to the survey! And also, every one of Indiana’s 92 counties was represented!
The Institute’s Center for Planning and Policy Studies was commissioned by the Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities and Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services to conduct the survey. Results of the Disability Poll will be used in the development of Indiana’s State Disability Plan, among other policy activities.
Staff of the Center for Planning and Policy Studies wish to thank all those individuals in agencies, schools, and advocacy organizations who helped them reach this record number of responses. It was a truly collaborative effort! Results will now be analyzed and distributed later in the spring. Creating and managing online surveys has become easier with the availability of user-friendly survey development tools like SurveyMonkey and SurveyGizmo. Jeffrey Chait, from the Institute’s Center on Policy Studies, will share some of his insights about making online surveys accessible to respondents with disabilities. Chait believes that with minimal effort, all surveys can be designed to meet accessibility standards while still maintaining an attractive user interface. His approach to design is to use principles of universal design that seek to blend aesthetics into the core design of online survey construction.

Accessible University is a monthly series of presentations sponsored by the IU-B Disability Roundtable. The purpose of the series is to educate the university community about accessibility issues and methodologies to create a more accessible university environment fully inclusive of students, faculty, staff, and visitors with disabilities.

IN INDIANA 
INDIANA’S SPECIAL EDUCATION LAW WORKING FOR YOU CONFERENCE: Family members, educators, and others interested in understanding more about Indiana’s special education law are invited to a full-day conference on Monday, March 21 titled Indiana Special Education Law Working for You – A Toolkit for Success to be held at the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd., Room 450, Indianapolis.
Sponsored by the Riley Child Development Center and the Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center of Riley Hospital for Children, and supported by the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, speakers will provide an overview of Indiana’s Article 7 special education law in the morning and how to use it, while breakout sessions in the afternoon will cover topics such as behavior strategies, case conference preparation, transition IEPs, social skills, discipline, IEP tools and post-secondary planning. Participants will leave with information to address current challenges related to special education law in Indiana.
The Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities is providing 50 full scholarships to family members of Indiana students with disabilities to attend the conference. Fees without scholarships are $70 for a family member and $100 for professionals.
