UPCOMING
NO-SHOWS IN ADA PARATRANSIT: ADA National Network, DREDF, and Easter Seals Project ACTION will present the seventh, and final, Transportation and the ADA focused webinar on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. (EST).
This webinar session will cover Topic Guide 7: No-Shows in ADA Paratransit (View or Download Topic Guide 7 at
http://www.dredf.org/ADAtg/#t-tg7. The Department of Transportation ADA regulation allows transit agencies to suspend, for a reasonable period of time, the provision of paratransit service to riders who establish a pattern or practice of missing scheduled trips, also known as no-shows.
The session will discuss not counting no-shows beyond the rider's control, using a proportion of no-shows rather than an absolute number, alerting the rider of no-shows, suspensions and the appeal process, how financial penalties may only be optional in lieu of a suspension, recommended no-show procedures, strategies for reducing no-shows, and late cancellations.
Participation is free but you must register. Visit
http://www.adaconferences.org/Transportation and click on the “Registration” web link on the right side navigation list to register.

ACROSS THE COURTYARD
VOICES OF SERVICES: Over Spring Break, students enrolled in an independent service learning course at Indiana University, Voices of Katrina, learned how service can align with their academic learning and foster social change. This three credit hour alternative Spring Break course provided the opportunity for students to travel to New Orleans to engage in direct service projects with the National Disaster Response Ministry of the United Church of Christ. Student activities included the painting of the exterior of a home where the owners have waited six years to see their home restored.
Students were encouraged to critically examine the limits and strengths of service in social change as they learned about issues of poverty – statistics and implications as related to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The course instructor was Cate Hart, Research Associate, Center on Education and Lifelong Learning. For more information or to learn about future trips, contact Cate at
camhart@indiana.edu.
In related work, second graders at the Columbus Signature Academy, Columbus, Indiana, designed a park in a neighborhood destroyed by floodwaters as part of a learn and serve project. Visit

The Columbus school project is one of 21 Learn and Serve Indiana Schools participating in a technical assistance project through the Center on Education and Lifelong Learning at the Institute, the Indiana Department of Education, and the Center on Evaluation and Educational Policy at Indiana University.
