Free Webinar on Accessible Doors and Maneuvering Clearances: The ADA National Network and the U.S. Access Board will host a free webinar on Accessible Doors and Maneuvering Clearances on Thursday, June 2, 2011 from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. (eastern).
Doors are required to be accessible in nearly every building and facility covered by the 2010 ADA Standards or the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Accessibility Standards. This session will review in detail the maneuvering clearances for accessible doors using images and animations to better explain the rationale behind these provisions. The speakers will also address criteria for recessed doors, automatic doors, doors in a series, and door hardware.
There is no registration fee but
registration is required to participate in the webinar. Presenters include Dave Yanchulis and Scott Windley, Accessibility Specialists, U.S. Access Board.
Indiana resource Center for Autism Summer Institute: Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism’s Summer Institute on Evidenced-Based Practices scheduled for June 6-10, 2011 and held at the Indiana Institute in Bloomington.
The Indiana Resource Center for Autism has been an implementation site for the National Professional Development Center on Autism, a grant project funded through the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), focusing on applying evidence-based practices in public school settings.
Summer Institute outcomes will provide participants with:
- Tools to evaluate classrooms;
- Validate outcomes of programming; and
- Implement evidence-based practices.
Registration fee is $400.00 per person. Certificates of attendance will be available to use for Professional Growth points and three hours of Indiana University graduate credit will be offered. Attendees will enroll for Graduate credit on Monday, June 6, 2011.

Building Bridges to School Readiness Workshops: The Institute’s Early Childhood Center is pleased to announce two workshops focusing on school readiness for preschoolers. These workshops will be held in conjunction with each other to maximize learning opportunities for attendees.
June 17, 2011: Promoting School Readiness by Reexamining the Classroom Day (3 hour morning workshop) at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, 2853 East Tenth Street, Bloomington, IN 47408 - As we learn more about what constitutes the design of an effective preschool classroom, we are asked to reexamine our practices surrounding how we help children prepare for kindergarten. This workshop will focus on classroom organization, one key dimension of effective preschool practices. Participants will learn how they can create effective classroom routines that increase learning opportunities for preschool children. Participants will have the opportunity to look at their preschool routines and develop individual plans for creating productive learning times for their children.
June 17, 2011: Crafting Effective Instructional Routines (3 hour afternoon workshop) at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, 2853 East Tenth Street, Bloomington, IN 47408 - Kindergarten classrooms typically rely on three instructional routines to teach children: whole class instruction, individual work time, and learning centers. Preschools also include these types of activities in their classroom, but they may differ in significant ways from what kindergartens do. What can we do to bridge these differences and create learning times that are effective, engaging, and help prepare children for kindergarten? Participants will have the opportunity to design plans for implementing what they learn once they return home.

In Bloomington
City of Bloomington Awarded Technical Assistance Training Opportunity on Accessible Transportation: The Easter Seals Project Action selected the Bloomington urbanized area as one of ten communities across the country which will receive technical assistance in 2011 through their Accessible Transportation Coalitions Initiative (ATCI).
The ATCI program is a one year systems change process designed to support local communities in their goals of creating models of accessible community transportation. This process began through the collaborative effort of Bloomington Transit, the Bloomington/Monroe County Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living. The project will commence with a 2-day training event scheduled for Sept. 13-14, 2011, and will be facilitated by Easter Seals Project Action.
“I am excited that Easter Seals has selected Bloomington to participate in the Accessible Transportation Coalitions Initiative,” said Barbara Salisbury. “Making things accessible for persons with disabilities makes things accessible for everyone. This program will help the community assess its strengths and weaknesses, establish a foundation for improved lines of communication, and develop an inclusive strategy to achieve accessible, community transportation options for everyone.”
A coalition of disparate community interests is needed in order for the workshop in September to be considered a success. Citizens and organizations interested in accessibility and transportation are encouraged to participate in this event and may contact Barbara Salisbury, logistics coordinator, at

Across Indiana
Ninth Annual Conference on Health, Disability, and the Law: Youth with Disabilities in the Justice System: Youth in juvenile correctional facilities often have significant educational, mental health, and medical needs. Unfortunately, these complex needs are not always adequately or properly addressed within the corrections system.
This conference will offer solutions to help address the needs of youth with disabilities in the juvenile justice system, including approaches being implemented to assist the youth to make better decisions in the future. Specific presentations by national and state experts will share the current status of services and options for this vulnerable population.
The conference will be held on Friday, June 17, 2011 from 8:00-5:00 p.m. at Inlow Hall, 530 West New York Street, Indianapolis, IN.
Registration fee is $75 for professionals and those requiring continuing education accreditation. The registration fee for parents/students who do not require continuing education accreditation is $25.00. Conference sponsors include the Riley Child Development Center, the Hall Center for Law and Health, the IU School of Social Work, and the Indiana Juvenile Justice Task Force.
