Two Great ADA Training Opportunities – June 16th and June 17th in Indy! ADA-Indiana, the Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, and the Great Lakes ADA Center are sponsoring two trainings on recent changes in the implementation of the ADA. Both trainings include “hearing it from the source” – with presenters from federal, state, and local agencies that are directly involved with implementing the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The New Accessibility Standards in the Built Environment, scheduled for Thursday, June 16th at the new JW Marriot in Indianapolis, is designed for training Architects, builders, code officials, and facility managers. The U.S. Department of Justice recently adopted the 2010 ADA Standards. Beginning on March 15, 2012, all new construction and alternations must comply with them. Until then, either the 2010 Standards, 1991 Standards (minus the elevator exemption), or UFAS (for public entities) may be used.

This full day of training on the 2010 ADA Standards includes Paul Beatty, Accessibility Specialist from the U.S. Access Board. The U.S. Access Board developed the accessibility guidelines that were included in the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design adopted by the Department of Justice. Beatty will provide an in-depth overview of the Standards, and answer questions from the audience. Also presenting will be Kim Paarlberg from the International Code Council. She will discuss the accessibility requirements of the International Building Code as they relate to the 2010 ADA Standards, and how coordination of accessibility requirements has an impact on State Building Codes, including Indiana. For more information and to register for this training, visit http://www.iidc.indiana.edu/cpps/ada/events/adastandards.asp.

Changed Employment Provisions under the Americans with Disabilities Act, As Amended will be held on Friday, June 17th at the new JW Marriot in Indianapolis. This workshop is primarily for those who work as human resource personnel, Vocational Rehabilitation and Workone Counselors, and employers.

This spring, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) released the Final Regulations to implement the employment provisions of the ADA, as Amended. The effective date for the final regulations was May 24th, 2011. This full day of training on the ADA and employment will include Joyce Walker-Jones, Senior Attorney Advisor from the EEOC. Walker-Jones will provide an in-depth overview of the final EEOC regulations, and address the impact of the regulations on employment processes.

Additionally, Alan Goldstein, Senior Attorney, from Equip for Equality (Illinois Protection and Advocacy Program) will update participants on current legal issues and Court decisions concerning employment and the ADA, as amended. Joshua Brewster, Deputy Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission will update participants on key employment and disability issues in Indiana, and provide information about how employment complaints related to disability are handled and resolved by the ICRC. For more information and to register for this training, see http://www.iidc.indiana.edu/cpps/ada/events/adaaa.asp.
