ACCESSIBLE HOSPITALS AND OTHER HEALTH CARE FACILITIES WEBINAR
: Section 223 of the 2010 ADA Accessibility Standards and the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standards includes scoping provisions for medical care and long term care facilities. This includes hospitals, rehabilitation,  psychiatric, and detoxification facilities. Learn more about patient rooms scoping for both medical and long term care along with some of the special technical specifications that apply to parking at specialized facilities, alarm systems, and toilet rooms in intensive care units.

IT’S A SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER!  HOTEL AND REGISTRATION DEADLINES FAST APPROACHING FOR INDIANA TRANSITION FORUM
: Things you should know about Lights, Camera, Action… A Student-Directed Production, the upcoming 2011 Indiana Statewide Transition Forum:

  • It debuts August 3-4 at the Sheraton Hotel & Suites in Indianapolis. The registration deadline is July 25!
  • David Test, from the National Secondary Transition Technical Assistance Center, will talk with transition leaders from Indiana and other states about progress and the current status of transition education.
  • Richard Luecking, of the national Center on Transition to Employment for Youth with Disabilities, will focus on work-based learning experiences for students.
  • Barbara Guy, of the Iowa Department of Education, will address the use of data from community-based instruction for transition assessments.
  • James Emmett, consultant to Indiana’s Vocational Rehabilitation Services Corporate Development unit, will talk about how Indiana employers are learning to recruit, hire and retain people with disabilities, and he’ll explain how to prepare students with autism for the workplace.

Other sessions for teachers, administrators, providers, families and people with disabilities will focus on students at risk for dropping out; the transition to college; using IPods at work; and supporting families with trusts, wills, and guardianships… and much more.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR ONLINE ‘PERSONALITY DISORDERS’ COURSE IS JULY 11
: Vocational rehabilitation counselors and other professionals have until July 11 to register for a self-directed, self-paced, online training on the diagnoses, behaviors, and treatment of personality disorders for individuals who are entering or re-entering the workforce or those who are maintaining employment. 

Personality Disorders, is the first of three new online trainings from the Vocational Rehabilitation Leadership Academy, an initiative of the Institute’s Center on Community Living and Careers and Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation Services.  The entire line-up for the summer trainings is:

July 18-22: Personality Disorders (registration deadline - July 11)
August 8-12: Addictions (registration deadline - Aug. 1)
September 19-23: Working with Ex-offenders (registration deadline - Sept. 12)

During the week of Personality Disorders, as well as for the week following the course, Angela Gutjahr, Psy.D., HSPP, will moderate an interactive Discussion Forum for course participants. Dr. Gutjahr is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience working with a community mental health center in Columbus, IN. 

Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation Services staff is sponsored through the Leadership Academy.   Community rehabilitation providers, mental health providers, behavioral support center staff, workforce development employees, and other non-VR professionals can also register for one, two, or all three courses in the summer series. INDIANA INSTITUTE RETIREMENTS
: Sherry Redman, Program Secretary for the Institute’s Center on Community Living and Careers, and Cathy Beard, Family Support Specialist, Early Childhood Center, have retired.

Redman began her journey at IU as a student in Art Education until she graduated in 1978. She went on to open a bookstore and start a family. Sherry returned to IU in 1988 as a secretary at Uralic Altaic Studies. She was a single mother with two young children (6 and 9). Redman spent the next seven years working at the Residence Life/Halls of Residence. In 1996, she worked with the Undergraduate Advising Division of SPEA and finally, the Indiana Institute. “I have learned a lot about myself and others during my 22 ½ years at the University and I look forward to the new experiences that come from retirement,” said Redman.

Beard began her service at Indiana University in August of 1974 as a secretary for the Indiana University Foundation. She then moved to the IU Physical Plant and then onto Purchasing. She joined the Early Childhood Center in 1987 as a Family Support Specialist. Cathy is a parent of a son with Down syndrome. Cathy’s work over the years included writing for families who have children with disabilities and management of the Early Childhood Meeting Place website, the Family to Family website, and the F2F First Words online newsletter.

The faculty and staff of the Institute extend our thanks to Sherry and Cathy for their work and we wish them well in retirement.
