Structured Teaching Strategies Workshop
: Mark your calendars for September 21-22, 2011 and plan to attend the Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism’s workshop on structured teaching strategies for students with autism.

Research consistently indicates that individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) respond favorably to a structured environment. This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of how and why to implement structured teaching strategies, such as visual schedules, work systems and deliberately designed work materials.

Day 1 will include the presentation of the rationale for using structured teaching, and outline of the different types of structure. Within each category participants will be shown a variety of examples (video, photographs) of structured teaching in existing classrooms/situations.

Day 2 will provide attendees with a more in-depth presentation of ways to use the strategies to accurately assess where to begin teaching, develop social communication skills, strategies for included students and to develop proactive strategies for decreasing challenging behaviors. The workshop will emphasize practical strategies that attendees can begin using immediately in their settings.

This workshop is geared for general and special education teachers, administrators, autism consultants, speech therapists, psychologists, and any other professionals working with individuals with a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder.

Registration fee is $350.00 per person. All registrations are now done online through IU Conferences. Registration questions should be directed to Indiana University Conferences at 800-933-9330, Melissa at iuconfs@indiana.edu, or Ginger at gscott@indiana.edu. Click to register. You will receive an e-mail acknowledgement of payment. This will be your confirmation and receipt. Be sure to keep for your records and reimbursement purposes.

Twenty-First Anniversary of the ADA Commemorated
: ADA-Indiana commemorated the 21st Anniversary of the ADA by hosting a training for advocates in Indianapolis last Friday, July 22. The event was co-sponsored by ADA-Indiana, the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities, and the Great Lakes ADA Center. The training featured Sally Conway, a Deputy Chief with the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Participants learned about the revised ADA regulations that went into effect this past year. Staff from the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community provided support for the event. (The Institute is the Fiscal Agent for ADA-Indiana.) Learn more about the ADA changes on ADA-Indiana’s website at http://www.adaindiana.org/adachanges.asp. Think College Indiana Logo

New Website Encourages College as an Option
: The Indiana Postsecondary Education Coalition recently launched a website to inspire families of young children with an intellectual disability to consider college as an option available to their child when (s)he graduates high school. The website is www.thinkcollegeindiana.org. Now, families, educators and employers have a resource that emphasizes the value of a college life experience for ALL.

The goal of the coalition and the website is to begin to tear down the barriers that have excluded students with intellectual disabilities from the experiences of college. The coalition believes that individuals with an intellectual disability can and should have the opportunity to gain meaningful employment that includes a full-time career, a living wage and insurance benefits if they so choose. In fact, the Indiana Postsecondary Education Coalition envisions a world in which young adults with intellectual disabilities have the option of electing college as part of their planning as they transition from high school to the adult world. A college experience, which can include academic, social and vocational components is really about providing opportunities to gain knowledge and skills that can change a life of dependence to one of independence and productive work!

“Indiana University's Indiana Institute on Disability and Community has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop model demonstration programs promoting the successful transition of students with intellectual disabilities into higher education. The Indiana Think College website is an informative site that will allow students, families, educators, and employers to be informed of postsecondary opportunities that are emerging in Indiana. It is exciting to be a part of this initiative which is opening new opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities in Indiana,” said Jean Updike, Project Coordinator, Indiana Partnership for Postsecondary Education and Careers Project.

About the Postsecondary Education Coalition

The Indiana Postsecondary Education Coalition is a statewide effort of advocacy organizations including Down Syndrome Indiana (DSI), The Arc of Indiana, the Autism Society of Indiana (ASI), Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana, Inc., the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University, IUPUI, the National Down Syndrome Society, Passages, Inc., and of course parents, educators and self-advocates promoting postsecondary education (college) options for students with a developmental disability.

The Indiana Coalition is well underway in this important endeavor for people with intellectual disabilities. We are working to put in place the building blocks that will result in more postsecondary education options over time. For more information on the Indiana Postsecondary Education Coalition, please visit www.thinkcollegeindiana.org.
