ADA-Indiana Webinar: ADA-Indiana will host a free webinar on Thursday, October 6 from 2:30-4:00 p.m. titled Accessible Retail Stores and Spaces. Retail stores and spaces may be located in variety of settings ranging from shopping and strip malls to spaces within airports, stadiums, government buildings, and many other venues. Elements and spaces associated with retail environments, such as accessible routes, parking, checkout aisles, sales and service counters, and waiting lines, are all a part of the 2010 ADA Accessibility Standards.
Thursday’s session will review in detail requirements in the standards for these elements and spaces. This webinar is free but
registration is required.
Related ADA-Indiana News: ADA-Indiana is seeking to partner with community organizations in Indiana to host a monthly series of Audio Conferences related to the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. ADA-Indiana intends to support up to 12 site locations for the 2011-2012 ADA Audio Conference Series, which runs from October 2011 to September 2012.
The ADA Audio Conference program presents an easy-to-attend and consistent public awareness training format about implementation issues related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). National guest speakers make presentations each month on topics varying from employment to accessible design. The 90-minute audio conferences are usually held on the third Tuesday of each month.
Sites will be selected from various areas of the state, except in Bloomington and Indianapolis, where sites are already being supported. Community organizations eligible to apply include United Ways, local government entities, Step Ahead Councils, Chambers of Commerce, local businesses, advocacy organizations, schools, institutions of higher education, Centers for Independent Living, and other community organizations.
Organizations wishing to become a local host site should submit a letter of intent postmarked by October 7th. Visit the ADA-Indiana website to download the

Comings and GoingsMank Speaks to President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities: On September 26, 2011, David Mank, Ph.D., Director of the Indiana Institute, addressed the
President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities in Washington D.C. He was invited by the Committee to discuss employment of people with intellectual disabilities and to discuss the 2009 Committee report of which he wrote.
The
2009 Report to the President and its recommendations address two closely related and persistent problems: high unemployment and lack of economic freedom for citizens with intellectual disabilities.

Pappas to Receive Meritorious Service Award: Vicki Pappas, former Director of the Institute’s
Center for Planning and Policy Studies, will receive the 2011 Meritorious Service Award at a special ceremony during the
