Last Chance to be Heard: Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services (IPAS) is seeking public input on Indiana’s Critical Barriers in achieving full community integration and independence! If you have not taken the survey, please consider taking a few minutes to complete this quick
survey.
IPAS is seeking input from Hoosiers with disabilities, family members, and professionals to identify major disability rights barriers which interfere with achieving full community integration and independence in Indiana. This information will assist IPAS to make decisions about how resources and manpower are used to address these barriers during the coming year.
To request the poll in an alternative format or for additional information about the survey, contact Jeffrey Chait at 1-800-825-4733 or e-mail
cwlab@indiana.edu. The Critical Barriers survey is being conducted by the
Center for Planning and Policy Studies at the Indiana Institute.
Comings and Goings
Mank to Co-Present at AUCD Policy Symposium: Indiana Institute Director David Mank will co-present at the
Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) 2011 National Conference today.
The session titled Promoting Employment First Policies and Practices will focus on changes in employment policies and implications for state DD agencies, community rehabilitation providers, consumers, families, advocates and employers. Speakers will share recent changes in the views of employment outcomes for persons with disabilities including the role that employment first is having at a state and local level; discuss effective practices and recent research; identify barriers to competitive integrated employment from multiple perspectives; and discuss how coalition-building can help achieve employment goals.
Co-presenters will include John Butterworth, Institute for Community Inclusion, Boston, Massachusetts; Michael Gamel-McCormick, Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation Fellow, Center for Disabilities Studies, Newark, Delaware; Kill Kiernan, Institute for Community Inclusion, Boston, Massachusetts; and Charlie Larkin, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation, Washington D.C.

Indiana Institute Staff to Present at AUCD National Conference: Sharon Hauss, Research Associate with the Institute’s Center for Planning and Policy Studies and Jane Harlan-Simmons, Research Associate with the Center on Aging and Community, will also present at the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) 2011 Conference on November 8th, 2011. Their presentation titled After Forty Years Where Do We Go from Here? Aging Caregivers in the Heartland is part of a session entitled Voices of Families: The Critical Role of Aging Parents and Siblings.
The Institute conducted in-depth interviews with 21 older caregivers. These conversations offer insights into their experience and implications for the direction of family support services. As adults with disabilities live longer, elderly parents age out of caregiver roles, and budgets are slashed, strain on families and service systems grows. Hauss and Harlan-Simmons will be discussing the needs of these aging families as they continue to provide care for their adult sons and daughters with developmental disabilities.

The Arc of Indiana Winter Heating Assistance Program Open for Applications: The Arc of Indiana's Board of Directors has approved $30,000 for The Arc of Indiana Master Trust
2012 Winter Heating Assistance Program. This will allow the trust to assist 300 low-income individuals with disabilities with $100 toward their winter heating bills. Funding for the Winter Heating Assistance Program comes from The Arc of Indiana.
To apply for assistance, individuals should contact the local chapter of The Arc in their county, or a local agency providing services to people with disabilities. This may include community mental health centers, Independent Living Centers, Area Agencies on Aging, or a district office of the Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services. These agencies should be aware of The Arc's Winter Heating Assistance Program. Application needs to be made through an agency so that the agency can certify that the individual is eligible for SSI or Medicaid Disability.
