IIDC IN THE NEWS
NEW BOOK PROVIDES ADVICE AND SUPPORT STRATEGIES FOR THOSE IN RELATIONSHIPS WITH PERSONS DIAGNOSED WITH ASPERGER SYNDROME: Adults with Asperger Syndrome often have difficulties establishing long-term relationships due to the defining characteristics of the syndrome. A new book, The Partner’s Guide to Asperger Syndrome, draws on the personal experiences of the authors to provide non-spectrum partners with tried-and-tested strategies and advice on how to overcome these barriers and achieve meaningful relationships.
Indiana University’s
Marci Wheeler and co-authors Susan Moreno and Kealah Parkinson explore the key differences that may impact these relationships, such as communication, social skills, and sensory issues.
Published by
Jessica Kingsley Publishers, The Partner’s Guide, includes more than 100 interviews and chapters on coping with stress and meltdowns, parenting, positive Asperger Syndrome qualities and how to use them to their full advantage in relationships, as well as advice on how non-spectrum partners can ensure that their own needs are met.
Wheeler holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work and has worked at the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at the Indiana Institute since 1983. She has served as a field instructor and adjunct faculty member in the School of Social Work at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
Moreno is the Founder and President of
MAAP Services Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides information and advice to parents, educators, and healthcare professionals about all aspects of autism spectrum disorders. Parkinson specializes in fostering communication skills in clients with developmental disorders. For additional information, contact Marci Wheeler at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail

DISABILITY SURVEY
PARTICIPATE IN THE 2012 DISABILITY POLL: You are invited to participate in the
annual survey, sponsored by
Indiana’s Developmental Disabilities Network partners, to help identify the current state of services, programs, and supports for people with disabilities in your community. The purpose of this survey is to ask people with disabilities, family members, and professionals in the disability field to share their thoughts about how “livable” Indiana communities are for people with disabilities. The results will be used to help guide programs in local communities around the state, ultimately with the goal of fostering independence, choice and control for people with disabilities. For more information, contact Jeffrey Chait at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail
jchait@indiana.edu.

REGISTER FOR FEBRUARY EMPLOYMENT SPECIALIST TRAINING FOR 2012: There are four opportunities in 2012 to participate in Indiana Employment Specialist Training, provided by the
Indiana Supported Employment Training Team (ISETT) and the Institute’s Center on Community Living and Careers. This year, employment specialists, program managers, vocational coordinators, mental health professionals, state agency and Work One personnel, can select from either “blended,” (primarily online with a face-to-face component) or a more traditional, six-day, face-to-face training format.
Both formats incorporate two sessions of information covering laws and policies, person-centered planning, job development, marketing, worksite analysis, resource mapping, teaching strategies, task analysis, assistive technology, job supports, and more.
The first blended/online Employment Specialist Training begins in February. Session I will be available online February 6-24, with a face-to-face meeting with ISETT trainers on February 7. Session II begins March 5-23, with a face-to-face meeting on March 6. Both face-to-face trainings are in Indianapolis. Registration is $400 per person and stipends are available

FOR PROFESSIONALS AND CAREGIVERS: TEACHING INTIMATE RELATIONSHIPS AND SEXUAL HEALTH TO INDIVIDUALS WITH ASD: Communication and social interaction are particularly difficult for adolescents and adults with high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and other social challenges entering into intimate relationships. While teaching sex education may seem like a formidable task, empowering individuals to make informed choices and decisions regarding their bodies and their relationships is crucial for lifelong health and wellbeing. Trainers Catherine Davies and Melissa Dubie, Educational Consultants with the Indiana Resource Center for Autism and co-authors of the recently released book, Intimate Relationships and Sexual Health (a copy of which is included as part of the workshop), describe detailed lessons covering the complex topics of both sex education and relationships.
This workshop will be held April 18, 2012 at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community in Bloomington. Registration fee is $95.00 per person. CEUs (Contact Hours 5.25) and Certificates of Attendance will be available and can be used for:
- Professional Growth Plan points
- Indiana Professional Licensing Agency for occupational therapists and occupational therapist assistants licensing requirements
- A request for Library Education Units has been submitted
- Continuing Education Contact Hours are available for $15.00
