Commission on Aging Offers Second Annual Creative Aging Festival
In recognition of Older Americans Month, the City of Bloomington Commission on Aging invites the community to celebrate the culture of creativity in our aging population. Since Bloomington is known as both an arts and retirement destination, the Commission recognizes these two attributes through its second annual Creative Aging Festival in May. The goals of the Creative Aging Festival are to highlight the artistic talents of older adults; promote intergenerational understanding through dialogue, sharing traditions, and storytelling; and increase awareness about the value of creative engagement to adult health and well-being.
The Commission has developed an online Creative Aging Festival program guide that details the creative aging events and exhibits happening in May. The Creative Aging Festival program guide can be viewed online at http://www.bloomington.in.gov/coa.
The Institute’s Center on Aging and Community is a primary sponsor of this festival along with the City of Bloomington Community and Family Resources Department, Ivy Tech Community College, Bell Trace Senior Living Community, and WTIU.
The Commission on Aging meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall in the Hooker Conference Room, Suite 245. All commission meetings are open to the public and minutes from meetings can be found on the City of Bloomington website. For additional information, contact Sue Owens at owenss@bloomington.in.gov or by phone at (812) 349-3468.

A Girl's Eye View: Identifying and Supporting Females with ADS's
The Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism will host a one-day workshop focusing on what is currently known about differences between males and females with ASD, and the implications this has for detecting ASD in females. Additionally, in order to best meet the needs of girls and young women with ASD, it is essential to understand what sex differences mean for practical issues related to treatment, and the unique social, communication, behavioral, and personal wellness experiences of females. This workshop will provide participants a “tool kit” for addressing the unique issues faced by females with ASD. The featured presenter will be Dr. Shana Nichols. Nichols is a licensed clinical psychologist and researcher, and is Director of ASPIRE Center for Learning and Development in Melville, NY. She has worked in the field of autism spectrum disorders for over 15 years. Nichols specializes in the experiences of females with ASD, growing up and adolescence, and dual diagnosis and mental health.
This workshop will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012, at Clay Middle School, 5150 East 126th Street, Carmel, Indiana. Registration fee is $95.00 for General Public and $55.00 for IRCA Autism Leaders (verification is required). Click to register. For workshop questions, contact Melissa Dubie (mdubie@indiana.edu) at (812) 855-6508. All questions regarding registration should be directed to Donna Beasley (dbeasley@indiana.edu) or (812) 855-6508.
