2012 NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEY

2012 Needs Assessment

Every three years, the Indiana Resource Center for Autism is legislatively mandated to conduct a Needs Assessment Survey. While state legislation does not specify what population needs to be surveyed, we have opted to gather information from families. We do this as part of our commitment to enhancing quality services and options for families and individuals across the autism spectrum.

The purpose of the survey is to allow families of individuals on the autism spectrum to discuss issues that are relevant to the care of their child, including quality educational programming, employment, Medicaid Waivers, insurance coverage, and other topics. Results of the survey are presented to the Indiana Legislative Commission on Autism and used for research purposes by the IRCA. The feedback you provide assists the Commission in evaluating the effectiveness of the current system and in developing additional policy and legislation.

While the survey is somewhat lengthy, we wanted to make sure to cover a range of topics that are relevant to families and individuals on the autism spectrum.

Unfortunately, because of urgency in gathering this information, on-line surveys must be completed no later than July 31, 2012.  All information will not be linked back to you or your child and family. Your participation in this research survey is strictly voluntary. Thank you in advance for your willingness to help with this project. If you have any questions about the survey, contact Scott Bellini via e-mail at sbellini@indiana.edu.

Mank Presents at National Leadership Consortium

David Mank, Director of the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, was a featured co-presenter at the National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities held last week and hosted by the University of Delaware’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

Mank’s presentation titled The Challenges of UCEDD Leadership, was co-presented with Bob Bacon, Director, Center for Disabilities and Development at the University of Iowa

The National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities at the University of Delaware is a partnership of national developmental disabilities organizations. The Consortium offers intensive week-long leadership institutes, short-term learning opportunities relevant to nonprofit leadership and management, mentoring programs, both undergraduate- and graduate-level campus-based programs, and a resource-rich website all aimed at improving the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families.

The goal of the National Leadership Consortium is to assure the quality and commitment of the next generation of leaders for government and nonprofit organizations serving people with developmental disabilities. Drawing upon the experience of the principals of the Leadership Consortium in heading two of the largest disability associations nationally, the Consortium is dedicated to building a corps of quality leaders and to the promotion of sound, values-based leadership practices.

Stafford Attends National Convening Meeting on Communities for All Ages

The Intergenerational Center at Temple University is concluding a three year project to support 23 U.S. communities to become “communities for all ages.”  This represents a new approach to community building that INTENTIONALLY brings diverse age groups together to address issues that affect people at all  stages of life.

Phil Stafford, Director of Indiana Institute’s Center on Aging and Community, was invited to a     National Convening meeting on June 21 to help assess lessons learned and discuss future directions for the work. The convening brought together researchers and practitioners from both youth development and aging fields, providing a stimulating cross-fertilization of ideas and energies. One particularly significant finding grew from the awareness that increasing distancing of old and young generations is also accompanied by increasing cultural distance. Generations at both ends of the age spectrum will need to adapt as demographic changes affect both aging and ethnicity within the country.
