2012 Needs Assessment Survey – Deadline July 31, 2012

Every three years, the Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism is legislatively mandated to conduct a Needs Assessment Survey. While state legislation does not specify what population needs to be surveyed, IRCA has opted to gather information from families. This is done as part of the Center’s commitment to enhancing quality services and options for families and individuals across the autism spectrum.

The purpose of the survey is to allow families of individuals on the autism spectrum to discuss issues that are relevant to the care of their child, including quality educational programming, employment, Medicaid Waivers, insurance coverage, and other topics. Results of the survey are presented to the Indiana Legislative Commission on Autism and used for research purposes by the IRCA. The feedback you provide assists the Commission in evaluating the effectiveness of the current system and in developing additional policy and legislation.

While the survey is somewhat lengthy, we wanted to make sure to cover a range of topics that are relevant to families and individuals on the autism spectrum. Unfortunately, because of urgency in gathering this information, online surveys must be completed no later than July 31, 2012.  All information will not be linked back to you or your child and family. Your participation in this research survey is strictly voluntary. If you have any questions about the survey, contact Scott Bellini via email at sbellini@indiana.edu.

Meet Artist Paul Neufelder - You've Got to Make a Personal Connection

When Columbus visual artist Paul Neufelder met Lois Templeton at a “pretty generic, middle-of-the-road” art fair in the late ‘80’s, he wasn’t expecting to find a life-changing mentor. “She looked like my grandma.” As it turned out, she was “an absolute ball of fire.

She was all about what I was doing: talking about color, and being bold and being out there, and having your own voice.” Neufelder’s friendship with Lois brought him kindness, assistance, and encouragement. After seeing a show of her work in Louisville impressed him tremendously, he took her opinions more seriously. “I realized that her compliments are not hollow.”

Lois is one of a series of mentors whom Neufelder credits as having been supportive and influential in his work over the past two decades as a painter, installation and scenic artist, teacher, and administrator. "This is a tough profession," he emphasizes. "These bonds are critical."

Paul Neufelder might have had a very different career. At age 14, he envisioned himself in adulthood as a forester. That’s when he broke his neck in a diving accident. "I found out I was better at art after my accident than before. That was the first time I found that I could really excel."

Artswork Indiana is an informal, statewide group of individuals and organizations who seek to increase arts related professional opportunities for people with disabilities.
