Social Security and Other Benefits Explained!
Registration is now open for this fall’s Learning the Basics: Social Security and Other Federal and State Benefits, a two-day informational workshop from the Center on Community Living and Careers, for VR counselors, mental health professionals, service coordinators, employment specialists, and case managers. October 15 - 16, 2012 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) Fort Harrison State Park Inn Indianapolis, IN
Participants will learn more about:
The Basics of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI);
SSI and SSDI Eligibility, Application, Appeals, and Overpayments;
Social Security’s Ticket to Work Program;
HUD, Food Stamps, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF);
Medicaid Eligibility and Work Incentives; and
Work Incentives for SSDI, SSI and Other State and Federal Benefit Programs.
Registration cost is $110, but there is no charge for VR personnel, who are sponsored by Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Deadline for registration is October 1. Click for more information about the workshop and registration.

Students Supporting Students
The Indiana Secondary Transition Resource Center (INSTRC), at the Institute’s Center on Community Living and Careers, has created a new, web-based interactive curriculum for Indiana high school teens who are supporting students with disabilities as peer mentors or peer tutors.
Peer Mentoring: Learning Together walks students through their roles and responsibilities, how to provide support, building relationships and friendships, communication, challenging behaviors, supporting students in the community, and more. The full curriculum features both student and teacher modules, videos, interactive pop-ups and illustrations, and additional resources.

Institute Staff Member Joins Stone Belt Board
Anne Higley, Outreach Specialist, with the Institute’s Center on Community Living and Careers, is now serving on the Board of Stone Belt in Bloomington. Stone Belt provides a variety of services to more than 1,300 people with developmental disabilities in Monroe, Lawrence, Owen, Bartholomew, and surrounding counties.
Higley, who is also the mother of two young adult children with autism, began serving a three-year term on the Stone Belt Board in August. Additionally, Higley continues to serve on the Board’s Legislative Advocacy Committee.

Family Support Waiver
On September 1, 2012, there were changes in Indiana’s Medicaid Waiver program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The new Family Supports Waiver replaced the Support Services Waiver and the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Waiver. The new Community Integration and Habilitation Medicaid Waiver serves those previously on the Autism or DD Waivers. Visit the Indiana Resource Center for Autism website for more information.

Bell Trace Presents
Bell Trace, a retirement living community in Bloomington, will host its annual wellness seminar for seniors on Thursday, September 13, 2012 from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. The Institute’s Phil Stafford, Director of the our Center on Aging and Community, will be the featured speaker.
Stafford’s presentation, Heirlooms, Collectables and All that Clutter: Understanding the Art of Detachment, will address issues surrounding seniors who are downsizing and transitioning to a smaller living space.
