Become an ADA-Indiana Host Site

ADA-Indiana is seeking to partner with community organizations in Indiana to host a monthly series of Audio Conferences related to the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. ADA-Indiana intends to support up to eight site locations for the 2012-2013 ADA Audio Conference Series, which runs from October 2012 to September 2013.

ADA-Indiana intends to support up to eight site locations for the 2012-2013 ADA Audio Conference Series, which runs from October 2012 to September 2013.

The ADA Audio Conference program presents an easy-to-attend, consistent training, and public awareness about implementation issues related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). National guest speakers make presentations each month on topics varying from employment to accessible design to discussion of recent Supreme Court decisions and other legal cases. The 90-minute audio conferences are usually held on the third Tuesday of each month. The new program season will begin next month in October and will continue through September 2013.

Sites will be selected from various areas of the state, except in Bloomington and Indianapolis, where sites are already being supported. Community organizations eligible to apply include United Ways, local government entities, Step Ahead Councils, Chambers of Commerce, local businesses, advocacy organizations, schools, institutions of higher education, Centers for Independent Living, and other community organizations.

Last year, ADA-Indiana partnered with the Arc Northwest Indiana (Gary), Blue River Services (Corydon), Muncie Human Rights Commission, Fifth Freedom Network (Fort Wayne), the WILL Center (Terre Haute), Indiana Department of Natural Resources (Indiana Government Center), Southeast Indiana Independent Living Center (Versailles), and Arc Bartholomew County (Columbus).

Organizations wishing to become a local host site for the 2012-2013 ADA Audio Conference series should submit a letter of intent postmarked by October 5th, or complete our online application. An Application Packet is available on the ADA-Indiana website. The packet includes more information about ADA-Indiana’s ADA Audio Conference program, and contains the specific instructions on how to apply.  Please visit the ADA-Indiana website to download the application packet, or complete the online application. For questions, contact Matt Norris at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail adainfo@indiana.edu.

Early Childhood Center has Introduced the use of iPads for Gathering Family Responses

When families age out of First Steps or no longer receive early intervention services and supports, they are asked to provide information about their experiences. The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) awarded a grant to the Indiana Institute’s Early Childhood Center to pilot the use of the iPads to make it easier for families and service coordinators to complete the responsibility. Four sites with 15 service coordinators have completed their training and 25 families have already completed their surveys. A Spanish language version will be forthcoming. The pilot phase of the project will be complete at the end of this year.

For more information on this project, contact Michael Conn-Powers at mipowers@indiana.edu or call (812) 855-6508.

ARC of Indiana State Conference

The Arc of Indiana’s 2012 Conference and Appreciation Luncheon is just around the corner, scheduled for Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at the Marriot East, Indianapolis. At our 2012 Conference, Building on the Blueprint for Change, we will share important updates and information on Indiana's new Medicaid Waiver Program, progress in bringing people off waiting lists and into services, and how you can be part of moving the Blueprint for Change forward in these challenging and exciting times.

The conference will feature 10 workshops with a focus on education, employment, self-advocacy, maximizing resources, and building natural supports and community connections.

The Arc's Appreciation Luncheon will celebrate those individuals, businesses and organizations that make a difference in the lives of people with I/DD and their families every day. In the afternoon, a Myth Busters session will offer a time to dialogue and share questions and concerns, get answers, and offer ideas on how to best move positive change forward. During this time, Self-Advocates of Indiana and the Indiana Conference of Executives of The Arc (ICEArc) will hold their annual meetings.

Following the close of the conference, The Arc of Indiana will hold its annual meeting and the first meeting of our newly elected board.
