Indiana Disability History Project

The Institute’s Center on Aging and Community is embarking on a new initiative to document highlights of the history of people with disabilities in Indiana. Recognizing the importance of both preserving and promoting public understanding of this history, the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities and Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services are partnering with the Institute to carry out the project.

The use of video, audio, and digital technology will be used to record and safeguard memories of movement leaders and pioneers such as community activists, people with disabilities, family members, professional service providers, and public officials.

If you are interested in participating in the Indiana Disability History Project, contact Phil Stafford at (812) 855-6508, e-mail staffor@indiana.edu, or visit the Project website.

Mank Moderates Panel Session at AUCD Conference

David Mank, Director of the Indiana Institute moderated a panel session titled Employment of People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in an International Context at the 2012 Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) Annual conference held in Washington D.C. last week.

Employment for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is emerging worldwide. While not the prevalent outcome in any country, the focus on employment as the best possible outcome for adults with disabilities has been renewed by people with disabilities as well as by service delivery systems. The vision and developments of supported employment in the USA and in Europe was the focus of this session.

Other panelists included Miguel Angel Verdugo, Ph.D. and Borja Jordan de Urries, Ph.D., both from the Institute on Community Integration, University of Salamanca, Salamanca, DC, Spain and Wendy Parent, Ph.D. and Michaeel Wehmeyer, Ph.D., Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies, Lawrence, KS.

Also, as we told you a few weeks ago, kudos are in order for Mank who received the 2012 Distinguished Achievement Award by the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) in honor of his many generous contributions to AUCD and the disabilities field.

The Distinguished Achievement Award is the highest accolade presented by AUCD and is given to individuals or organizations making distinguished lifetime contributions to people with developmental disabilities and their families. Past recipients have included Eunice Kennedy Shriver and the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation and Justin Dart.
