ADA-Indiana Audio Conference

What is the relationship between the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (referred to as GINA)? Sharon Rennert, a senior attorney with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, will provide an overview of these two federal laws, and their implications for employers in requesting medical and genetic information.

“ADA and GINA: Understanding Medical or Genetic Information Requests in the Workplace”
Tuesday, December 18th
2:00 - 3:30 pm EASTERN
9 Indiana Locations
Free and Open to the Public

Title I of the ADA and Title II of GINA limit employer access to medical information. Regardless of whether an employer or an occupational health provider maintains information in paper or electronic files, it must ensure that personal health information about applicants or employees cannot be accessed, except under specific circumstances.

Interested in Continuing Education Credits? The audio conference provider, Great Lakes ADA Center, is offering CRC, SHRM, University of Illinois at Chicago CEU, and Certificate of Attendance at no cost for this session. Sign up to receive the CEU with the on-site coordinator at your location of choice (Bloomington, Fort Wayne, Gary, Indianapolis, Muncie, Terre Haute, Rockport, Versailles, and West Lafayette). If you can’t make it to one of the hosted locations, visit our website to find out more about other options, some are available at no cost!).

For more information about this session, contact Matt Norris at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail adainfo@indiana.edu.

First Responders Training Conducted

Police officers and other first responders may encounter or be asked to provide services to a person on the autism spectrum. Recognizing the signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and knowing how to respond effectively to a person on the spectrum can minimize situations of risk or victimization of the individual, as well as reduce the risk to the police officer.

On November 30, 2012, Kristie Brown Lofland, Educational Consultant, Indiana Resource Center for Autism (IRCA), presented “Training Indiana’s First Responders” to the Indiana University Police Department. The training was videotaped so that regardless of work shifts, all officers of the department could view the training. In addition to the training developed by the IRCA, printed material from the Autism Society of America for law enforcement and other first responders was given to the department for future reference. Awareness and education of first responders about disabilities increases the ability to provide appropriate responses and increase the safety of all parties involved. For more information about this and other training conducted by the IRCA, contact Cathy Pratt at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail prattc@indiana.edu.
