Zooming In On Nuance Challenged Social Communicators Workshop
Mark your calendars for April 26, 2013 and plan to attend this workshop featuring Michelle Garcia Winner and Pamela J. Crooke. Sponsored by the Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism and hosted by Avon Middle School North, Zooming In will focus on developing nuance-based social learning activities that connect to select Common Core Standards as well as explore how to work with individuals who struggle with self-regulation, social anxiety, and depression (Nuance Challenged Social Communicator).
Co-presenter Michelle Garcia Winner is a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) who specializes in the treatment of students with social cognitive deficits at the Social Thinking Center, her clinic in San Jose, California. It was her interest in autism while attending the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1979 that became the catalyst for becoming an SLP.
Pamela Crooke, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a Senior Therapist at the Social Thinking Center and part of the Social-Cognitive team in San Jose, California. She has served on the clinical faculty of three universities and has published research on the effectiveness of using the Social Thinking Vocabulary in schools.
Registration fee is $125.00 for the public and $100.00 for autism leaders. Payment is by credit card or purchase order only. The workshop is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Eastern) with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m. Breakfast and lunch are on your own.

Beyond Compliance: Embracing Teacher Appraisal Conference
Since the end of December, we’ve been hinting of things to come as the Institute’s Center on Education and Lifelong Learning, the IN-TASS Project, and the Joyce Foundation, present the first annual conference that empowers school administrators, teachers, policy makers, and professional learning consultants to move beyond compliance and embrace teacher appraisal systems that are fair, optimize instructional excellence and academic achievement, and are practical and manageable. Breakout sessions will include (click for more information):
Options for untested grades and subjects; Evaluator training and certification; Legal and policy issues; TAP schools; Quality feedback and conferences; Implications for teacher education; Effective technology tools; Teacher compensation research and practice; PLCs and teacher appraisal; Components of quality teacher appraisal systems; Gathering data for student growth; Unique considerations for small, rural districts; Developing evaluator capacity; and Dealing with “unique personnel.” Conference dates are April 25-26, 2013. The conference will be held at the Hilton Indianapolis North. Early-bird registration fee is $95.00 per person (January 28-March 15, 2013). IN-TASS Districts: $75.00 per person for teams of 5 or more; $105.00 for individuals. Regular registration fee (March 15-April 6, 2013) is $150.00 per person. 2013 Work Incentive Fact Sheets Now Available
The Institute’s Center on Community Living and Careers (CCLC) has reformatted and updated its series of fact sheets on many of the Social Security Administration’s work incentive programs. There are 19 fact sheets that present brief explanations of work incentive programs available to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients and Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) beneficiaries, such as:
Impairment-Related Work Expenses; Trial Work Period; Extended Period of Eligibility; and Substantial Gainful Employment for 2013
Also included on the CCLC Benefits Information and Planning webpage are resources for people with disabilities and their families or providers who may need information on housing subsidies, special savings accounts that won’t impact benefits, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). A link to the 2013 Social Security Red Book, which has more information about all of SSA’s work incentives, is also available on the page.
