AAC-In-Action Sponsors Two Disability Awareness Events in March
AAC-In-Action at Indiana University will host two events in March for Disability Awareness Month. On Monday, March 4, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., AAC-In-Action will host a screening of a documentary called “Only God Could Hear Me” at the IU Cinema. The documentary tells the story about four individuals who are nonverbal and rely on augmentative communication devices to speak. Immediately following the screening, one of the stars from the show, Chris Klein of BeCOME AAC, will take the stage for a live Q and A! DVD copies of the documentary and t-shirts will be available for purchase in the lobby to help raise money for Chris’ travel expenses.
On Tuesday, March 5, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Indiana University Memorial Union, Klein will give a presentation titled “The Art of Building Relationships: A Perspective from a Person Who Uses AAC.” AAC-In-Action is seeking sponsorship to help support Klein’s travel to Indiana from his home in Michigan. If your organization (or you personally!) would like to donate – no amount is too small! – AAC-In-Action would be so grateful! Contact Beth Ahmad at bea.cons@prentrom.com or call (317) 364-0216 to arrange payment. All donations are tax deductible.

Cole to LA
Sandi Cole, Director of the Indiana Institute’s Center on Education and Lifelong Learning, co-presented a breakout session titled Creating Quality Teacher Appraisals Linked to Student Achievement and Compensation, at the 2013 American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Conference on Education in Los Angeles, California on February 21-23, 2013. Cole’s presentation highlighted the Center’s work in Indiana with the Indiana Teacher Appraisal and Support System (IN-TASS) teacher evaluations. Ryan Snoddy, Superintendent from Northwestern School Corporation and IN-TASS participant, was Cole’s Co-Presenter.
The IN-TASS model employs a flexible and collaborative process to advise districts as they work with stakeholders to design a teacher appraisal system that meets and exceeds the requirements of Indiana legislation.
IN-TASS identifies key decision points in the creation of a system that not only assesses, but supports, effective teaching. IN-TASS does not recommend a single "model" but provides guiding questions, makes recommendations regarding best practices, and facilitates reflective conversation as districts design systems that best meet their needs. Click for more information on IN-TASS or contact Sandi Cole at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail cmcole@indiana.edu.
