Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS 2) Workshop

The Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism will host a two-day workshop on June 24-25, 2013 at MSD of Warren Township (exact location TBD) on the five modules of the ADOS-2. The presentation will include demonstrations of two of the modules, with participation by two school age students. There will be an opportunity to practice and discuss the scoring criteria. The clinical use of the ADOS-2 will also be discussed.

This workshop will feature Dr. Pam DiLavore, Assistant Director of the Chapel Hill TEACCH Center. DiLavore holds a doctorate in Special Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked in the autism field since 1978 as a teacher, researcher, and TEACCH autism specialist. She participated in the development of the ADOS while working with Dr. Catherine Lord as the research coordinator on a longitudinal study of the early identification of autism.

DiLavore has conducted ADOS training in several states as well as participating on TEACCH training teams nationally and internationally. Her primary interests continue to be around diagnostic and clinical work with children who face behavioral and developmental challenges.

This workshop is designed for School Psychologists, Clinical Psychologists, and Speech Language Pathologists and related professionals interested in learning how to use the ADOS-2.  (This program will not provide reliability training for those interested in using this instrument for research purposes.)

Registration fee is $380.00 per person and includes all required materials for the workshop such as scoring protocols. Also included is a DVD showing 2 administrations of the ADOS-2 (along with completed scoring Protocols) that attendees can view after the workshop to reinforce the skills learned. Participants may choose to bring their own ADOS-2 manual in order to make notes for their future use of the manual but additional manuals will not be provided at the training.

Click to register. Payment may be made by credit card or purchase order only. All registration payment questions should be directed to IU Conferences at 800-933-9330, Melissa at iuconfs@indiana.edu, or Ginger at gscott@indiana.edu.

Assessing Indiana’s Early Childhood Classrooms

The Institute's Early Childhood Center has published a set of papers about their study, Assessing Indiana’s Early Education Classrooms, conducted in the fall 2012 and spring 2013.
The study investigated how well early education programs in Indiana were doing. We were interested in seeing how well our classrooms performed in relation to other states and to one another. We also wanted to see how well our practices aligned with the considerable research evidence documenting effective early education practices that has emerged over the past 10 years.

The papers include the Final Report, three briefing papers, and seven teacher tip sheets. Assessing Indiana’s Early Education Classrooms - Final Report, by Michael Conn-Powers, Center Director, Alice Frazeur Cross, Research Associate, and Susan D. Dixon, Project Consultant, describes the study purposes, participants, methods, analyses, results, and implications. The briefs focus on study findings and implications: How Children Spend Their Time in Preschool: Implications for Our Practice by Dixon; Teacher-Child Interactions that Make a Difference, by Conn-Powers; and Which Curriculum Should We Use? How Should We Choose?, by Cross. Click to access Tip Sheets for Teachers: Practices to Promote School Readiness.
