New Study on Making Communities More Accessible

Frank Marshalek of the Institute’s Center on Aging and Community, is conducting a study sponsored by IACT and funded by the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, on recent community initiatives intended to improve the quality of life for seniors, people with disabilities, and the community at large by making communities and cities more accessible.

Such initiatives are focused on improving access to basic services, retail, physical, and mental health services, arts and entertainment, and other facets of community life by either walking or using other alternative modes of transportation. Other initiatives are designed not only to improve mobility and accessibility, but also to improve health, lifestyle, housing, and independent living options that allow individuals to remain active in the community.

The study consists of a series of short surveys on the related topic areas and responses will be used to produce an inventory and profiles of initiatives revolving around the Communities for a Lifetime and related concepts.  For a better understanding of the benefits of lifetime community initiatives, see the following interview with Katrina Gosset on “Why Living Downtown Works."

Disability Poll on Health Issues

Do you know it’s not too late for Hoosiers with disabilities, family members, and advocates to take part in this year’s Indiana Disability Poll: Focus on Health Issues. In addition to questions about overall health status and access to care, this year’s Poll asks about wellness activities and health care barriers. Participants are not asked to identify themselves in the survey, and the answers are anonymous.

The Annual Indiana Disability Poll is a joint effort of the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities, and Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services.

To request the survey in an alternative format, or for additional information, contact Matt Norris by phone: 1-800-825-4733 or e-mail cpps@indiana.edu.
