Critical Barriers Survey - Your Input is Needed!

Please help identify critical issues that Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services (IPAS) should consider as priority areas for their advocacy efforts over the next several years. The survey lists many barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from living as independently as they wish. You are asked to select those barriers that you believe - if eliminated or reduced - would benefit people the most. By completing the survey, you can help IPAS identify priority areas that they should target for advocacy and case selection. With your input, IPAS can work on barriers where their advocacy efforts might have the greatest impact.

You can complete the survey online by going to http://www.thepollingplace.org or you can request a paper copy by contacting IPAS at 1-800-622-4845.

Bloomington High School North and Edgewood High School Open Best Buddies Chapters

The Best Buddies state office officially opened Best Buddies chapters at Bloomington High School North located in Bloomington, Indiana and Edgewood High School located in Ellettsville, Indiana in October, 2007.

Bloomington High School North and Edgewood High School will join 37 other high schools in Indiana in the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. Stephanie Ridge of Bloomington North and Harrison Carmichael of Edgewood, were selected as Chapter Presidents to work closely with teacher volunteers and student officers to match students with intellectual disabilities in a one-to-one friendship with a person without an intellectual disability. Ridge collaborated with teachers Janice Hazelrig and Amee Yoder to create 15 Buddy Pairs at Bloomington North; and with the support of teachers Jeff Carmichael, Judy Briscoe, and Shirley Megnin, Carmichael created 10 one-to-one friendships.

Jeff Carmichael, Special Education Advisor at Edgewood High School, shares, "I am so happy for Edgewood to be a part of Best Buddies. We are going to have a great time this year involving all levels of kids. I personally am excited as I feel I have found a source to help my "buddies" to better socialize within the high school and the community. Thanks to Anthony [Kennedy Shriver, Founder and CEO of Best Buddies International] for his insight in starting such a great organization."

Best Buddies Indiana is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships. Each Best Buddies chapter matches students with intellectual disabilities in one-to-one mutually enriching friendships with their non-disabled peers. The friendships created through Best Buddies help to increase self-esteem, confidence and the abilities of all involved and allow the students with intellectual disabilities to experience mainstream high school life.
