Join Indiana disability advocates at the annual Governor's Council Conference on Disability, scheduled for November 27-28, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Indianapolis.
Kathy Snow, a parent advocate and author of Disability is Natural (http://www.disabilityisnatural.com/) will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, November 27. Snow also will present at two of the concurrent conference sessions. On Wednesday, November 28, national presenters include Marty Ford, Director of Legal Advocacy for The Arc and UCP Disability Policy Collaboration and Richard Pimentel (Awards Luncheon speaker), a Vietnam vet who lost most of his hearing in an explosion and later was a key player in the passage of the ADA. A movie based on his life entitled Music Within, starring Michael Sheen and Ron Livingston will be released this fall (http://www.musicwithinmovie.com/).
Speakers and 10 different workshops were selected to appeal to parents, people with disabilities, and advocates. There will be opportunities to network with other advocates, take part in the annual disability poll, win door prizes, get information from 30 exhibitors, and dance at the disco reception.
Discounted registration fees are available for parents and people with disabilities and there are scholarships for people who receive SSI, SSDI or TANF. Differentiation Live, a new DVD co-produced by the Forum on Education at Indiana University, production partner Elephant Rock Productions, and the Indiana Institute's Center on xEducation and Lifelong Learning, documentsxteachers as they begin xtheir differentiated instruction journey.
The Forum on Education visited educators from elementary and middle school classrooms to demonstrate and xdescribe ways they plan for instruction within an Understanding by Design mindset to ensure all children are engaged in meaningful, standards-based work. Each classroom segment examines instructional strategies purposefully designed to provide proven learning experiences based on students' readiness and learning profiles. With classroom footage and interviews, a thoughtful and realistic approach to differentiated curriculum, assessment and instruction is made reasonable and feasible. Phil Stafford, Center Director of the Indiana Institute's Center on Agingxand Community,xwill participate in a speaker series showcasing national best practices and models of excellence in areas of health care challenging Western New York on Thursday, November 15 in Buffalo, New York.
Sponsored by the Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York and The John R. Oishei Foundation, in partnership with the P2 Collaborative of Western New York and the University at Buffalo Regional Institute, Reaching for Excellence: Community Vision and Voices for Western New York Health Care, seeks to engage Western New Yorkers in exploring possibilities and setting goals for a stronger, improved health care system for the eight-county region.
Stafford's presentation will focus on trends demanding a proactive effort to address capacity to serve the unique needs of a growing elderly population. Models range from neighborhood networks that provide basic care and services so that the elderly can remain in their homes, to Medicaid pilot programs that compensate families for providing elder care.
