Transition IEP: New Regulations and Rules Workshops

Parents and educators, the Institute's Center on Community Living and Careers, in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Education, Division of Exceptional Learners, will host a series of regional workshops focusing on the new regulations and rules for transition services for young adults based on IDEIA and the proposed Article 7. Monitoring expectations of the Transition IEP will also be addressed.

2007 Brain Injury Association of Indiana Annual Conference

The Brain Injury Association of Indiana (BIAI) announces the 2007 annual brain injury conference to be held on October 11 and 12, 2007 at the Radisson Hotel at the Indianapolis Airport.

Keynote Speakers include NASCAR favorite, Ernie Irvan, and combat medic, Patrick Campbell. Irvan will speak about his own personal story of triumph after sustaining two traumatic brain injuries and his Race2Safety Foundation (http://www.race2safety.com/) which promotes head injury awareness and safety. Campbell will share his experience as a combat medic and how traumatic brain injury has become the "signature injury of the Iraq War."

Conference objectives are to:
· Develop a thorough understanding as to how executive functioning impacts community Integration;
· Identify contrasts between traditional "behavior management" and contemporary "Personal Intervention;"
· Learn what neuropsychopharmacological strategies enhance and disrupt executive functioning; and
· Provide survivors and family members with strategies for coping with fatigue, vision impairments, substance abuse, and assistance with addressing challenges with various state agencies such as Social Security, Medicaid, etc.

Attendees new to the field of brain injury will learn how brain injury impacts a person's functioning from time of injury and throughout their lifetime. Specialized training will be provided to Indiana State Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors to assist with their management of clients who have sustained a brain injury.

Specialized training and examination will be provided for the Certification of Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) program in a joint partnership with the American Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (AACBIS). Classroom Management Regional Workshops

The Institute's Center on Education and Lifelong Learning, in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Education, will sponsor a series of regional introductory workshops on classroom management.

Research on effective disciplinary practices demonstrates that schools over-rely on reactive and punitive consequences to change behavior. Effective classroom management involves:
· Clarifying and teaching procedures and rules;
· Educators providing strong guidance and clear purpose, including effective instruction, high rates of students engagement, and adequate supports;
· A balanced set of disciplinary interventions;
· A particular teacher "stance" involving active supervision and a calm demeanor; xand
· Explicit teaching of responsibility and self-management.

Classroom teachers, including general and special area and education teachers, instructional assistants and paraprofessionals, and building administrators who wish to support teachers with classroom management should plan to attend.

There is no registration fee associated with these workshops. If you attend an introductory regional workshop, you will be eligible to enroll in the Classroom Management "Summer Camp," to be held for three consecutive days in June/July 2008. Emergency Planning and Disaster Publication for People with Disabilities

I am Citizen Prepared is a publication forxpeople with xdisabilities and the people who support them. Emergency xpreparedness is a topic that is on the minds of many Americans xthese days in light of the 9-11 tragedy andxsubsequent xterrorist xattacks all over the world. There is much written about the subject, but xnot in a format that is accessible to people with xintellectual/developmental disabilities.

I Am Citizen Prepared, written by Maribeth Mooney, Research Associate, with the Indiana Institute's Center on Aging and Community, is designed to provide information that does not focus on the scary aspect of disasters and emergencies. It offers the reader suggestions on how to prepare oneself in the event that an emergency does arise. The reader is encouraged to think of emergency preparedness as a project rather than a reaction to an unexpected and frightening event. I am Citizen Prepared is 49 pages and opens with Adobe Acrobat.
