Accessible University Series
This month's Accessible University presentation, entitled A Campus Looks at Web Accessibility, will focus on what IU's Bloomington campus is doing to promote web accessibility and make sure all of the IU-Affiliated websites meet ADA compliance requirements. Come hear more about the work of IU-B's Web Accessibility Committee, its charge, its place in IU-B administration, its membership, and the issues the Committee is currently working on. Also, learn more about the resources of the Adaptive Technology Center in helping faculty, departments, and affiliate organizations make their websites more user-friendly to people with disabilities.
Margaret Londergan will be guest presenter. Margaret is the Director of the Adaptive Technology Center, one of the key places to receive advice and feedback about web accessibility. The session will be held on Wednesday, October 15 from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Oak Room, Memorial Union, IU-B.
Call for Art Work - Art of Mental Health
Each year, Mental Health America of Monroe County is a sponsor of an annual event focusing on the Art of Mental Health. The title of this year's program is The Art of Aging. Three events are scheduled for November, 2008 in Bloomington. On Saturday, November 16, a showing of the entertaining and moving documentary film Young@Heart will be held at the Whittenberger Auditorium on the Indiana University campus.
Artists who would like to have photos of their work shown on a large screen (prior to the film and the lectures) should e-mail Jane Harlan-Simmons (jeharlan@indiana.edu) at the Indiana Institute. Please send no more than 5 photo files, in a resolution of 200 to 300 dpi, with your name (optional), age, and the city/town in which you reside, by October 23, 2008. Note: Not all work submitted will be included due to the limited number of photos that can be accommodated. For more information about the call for entries, e-mail Jane or call her at (800) 825-4733. Additionally, two free lectures will be held on Thursday, November 6. A lecture entitled Brave New World: Education and Aging Well will be held at the School of Education Auditorium at 11:15 a.m. and a presentation entitled The Art of Living a Long, Healthy, and Full Life will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Monroe County Public Library.
Building Social Relationships Workshops
The Institute's Indiana Resource Center for Autism, in conjunction with the Evansville-Vanderburgh-Posey and East Central Indiana Special Services, will host two one-day workshops on building social relationships through the social skills instructional model developed by Scott Bellini, Assistant Director of the Institute's Indiana Resource Center for Autism.
These workshops will address the social-emotional functioning of children and adolescents on the autism spectrum and provide participants with practical and effective strategies for teaching social skills. Factors that lead to the most beneficial social outcomes for children on the autism spectrum, based on both his research and clinical experience, will also be addressed.

The success of social skill interventions is dependent upon the cooperation and contribution of multiple individuals. Material will be presented in a manner that is both meaningful and understandable to parents and professionals. Teachers, para-professionals, counselors, social workers, psychologists, speech and language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, case managers, physicians, and other interested individuals should plan to attend.
