Arts and Humanities Projects for Self Expression and Advocacy

The Center on Aging and Community is actively engaged in activities that promote understanding of the history and experience of aging and disability. These projects create opportunities and modes of expression that allow individuals to speak for themselves, whether or not they use words as part of their daily communication. They include projects that nurture the creative potential and recognize the artistic accomplishments of people with disabilities. The Center's emphasis on Arts and Humanities comes out of a committment to listen to voices that are seldom heard and to share stories that have never been told.

Picturing my world

Residents of Bloomington, Indiana who have disabilities photographed subjects of personal significance in their everyday lives. They then created stories about themselves.

Muscatuck Oral History Project

This project aims to preserve and convey the history of a state institution as told by people who have lived, and worked there. Both families and community members tell their story.
