Picturing my World
The Picturing My World project documents the experience and everyday lives of Bloomington, Indiana residents who have disabilities. Through their own words and photographs, four adults have captured the essential relationships, possessions, and places that comprise their daily landscape.
Working with a photography instructor, and supported one-on-one by members of the Bloomington Photography club, participants who had little or no experience taking photos used disposable cameras to shoot subjects of their choosing. They then evaluated the resulting prints, selecting and captioning those they wished to exhibit. In collaboration with a writer/editor, each of the four photographers also created a biographical story about the experiences that have shaped them as children and adults.
Picturing My World was exhibited at Bloomington's Monroe County Public Library, and can now be viewed at the virtual Museum of the Person - Indiana.
Picturing My World is a project of the Center on Aging and Community at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community. The project and culminating exhibit were produced in coordination with the Indiana University Folklore department's 2001 Summer Field School in Cultural Documentation, cosponsored by the Library of Congress, Washington D.C.
