Building Leadership Series
Workshop Descriptions
Choice, rights and responsibilities:
What choices am I really making? What are my rights and responsibilities?
This workshop focuses on what choices and decisions people in the general population make daily throughout their lives and how one makes informed choices. Strategies are discussed to help participants make more of their own choices, understand their rights and learn that with choices come responsibilities. The voting process is included and many participants got registered and voted in the November election.
Self-determination/self-advocacy:
I hear these words, what do they mean for me?
The meaning of self-advocacy and self-determination are explored. Much time is devoted to discussing the meaning of being a self advocate. Numerous opportunities for role play and problem solving are provided to practice advocating and speaking up for oneself as well as a group.
Person-Centered Planning:
What does it mean for me and what is a good plan?
Person Centered Planning (PCP). The focus of this workshop is to inform and reinforce the crucial role each participant plays in his/her plan, whether it is a person centered plan, day, residential, behavioral or any plan. The responsibilities each person has in being prepared and active in their meeting and ongoing plan as well as their rights in the meeting is explained. A key piece of this workshop is map making. Participants are provided opportunities to make two different personal maps that tell a story or a piece of their life. The map maker shares the maps with the group.
All the workshops will have activities, role-playing, videos, and discussions.
