IN-AccessIT: Distance Ed Web Cast (sent on 6/3/04):

Dear Colleagues,The purpose of this email is to inform you of a free Web cast on improving accessibility in distance education next Wednesday on June 9th at 2pm.The Georgia Research in Accessible Distance Education (GRADE) project launched a new, free, online tutorial at http://www.accesselearning.net/ that provides information about making distance learning accessible to all students. This Web cast will highlight the resources of the tutorial and provide information on how IT professionals can increase accessibility on their campuses.

Dear Colleagues,In this message we would like to share information and resources about accessible distance learning.The point of distance learning is to offer educational access to more students. Instructors must consider beforehand that students with disabilities may be taking their distance education courses.Please forward this information to the individuals involved in distance learning at your institution. Otherwise, if you provide us with their contact information, we will gladly contact them directly. We always welcome the opportunity to expand the support we provide by reaching even more individuals working in Indiana 's postsecondary institutions.

ONLINE TUTORIAL - Designing Accessible Web-Based Courses This online tutorial covers: accessibility issues and requirements, how to make your website accessible, discussions about features and tools used with or within WebCT, accessibility pertaining to WebCT specifically, suggested solutions to inaccessibility, and Web site evaluation tools. To access this helpful tutorial go to: www.evc.edu/ada/overview/index.htm. No registration is required and access to information is flexible and self-paced.

DO-IT VIDEO & PUBLICATION - Real Connections: Making Distance Learning Accessible to Everyone This 12 minute streaming video presentation provides guidelines for designing Web-based distance learning courses to fully include all students, including those with disabilities. This video is an excellent introduction to the barriers encountered by some students as well as a great resource for practical solutions. The SALT Project is in collaboration with the IMS Global Learning Consortium to make online learning resources accessible to people with disabilities by developing and promoting specifications and effective models that will help level the playing field for learners with disabilities. IN-AccessIT: Distance Ed Webcast (sent on 6/07/05):

Dear Colleagues, We would like to inform you of a wonderful opportunity to learn more about accessible distance education.The National Center on Disability and Access to Education (NCDAE) is presenting a live audio Webcast titled, ¡°ACCESSIBLE DISTANCE EDUCATION TECHNOLOGIES & TECHNIQUES," on Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005. The panel will discuss the accessibility of various distance education technologies used in postsecondary education to deliver curriculum, such as Macromedia's Breeze, Polycom, and the Blackboard educational system. Panelists will focus on the accessibility and usability of the technologies as well as techniques and best practices for creating accessible curriculum for distance education using these technologies. Panelists include:

  • Bob Regan, Director of Product Management for Education, Government, and Financial Services, Macromedia, Inc

  • Soyini Cisse, Engineering Services, Blackboard, Inc.

  • Kristine Neuber, Kellar Institute for Human Disabilities, George Mason University .

The broadcast will begin at 2pm Central Time and last one hour. Tune in free of charge 10 minutes before the broadcast begins. You can tune in using your computer with either Windows Media Player or Quicktime. Archives, both transcript and audio, will be available shortly after the conclusion of the broadcast.
