Elsie McPee and her brother, Tommy, move from state-to-state with their Mom, who schools them at home and tells them to never leave the house. Elsie goes to meet the neighbors and when her Mom finds out she moves them that night. When Tommy, who has autism, gets sick Elsie is forced to confront her suspicions about her Mother's behavior.
