A Corner of the Universe by Ann M. Martin
Hattie had been looking forward to a quiet summer, but that was not to be. Her Uncle Adam, who has mental disabilities, comes to live with them. She didn't even know she had an Uncle Adam. The town laughs at him and Hattie must find a way to adjust to life with her new Uncle. This book was an Newbery Honor Winner in 2003.
This Newbery Honor Winner from 1994 is the story of Vernon. Vernon and his friends tease his neighbors Maxine and Ronald. Ronald is Maxine's son and has mental retardation. Vernon is forced to face the truth about his neighbors when the state comes to take Ronald away from Maxine. Will Vernon help Maxine fight to keep her son? Why does the state want to take Ronald away?
Zach is waiting for his mom in the coffee shop when suddenly there is a robbery that goes bad and everyone inside is taken hostage. Zach has schizophrenia and admits to not being scared by the robbery because he is "used to seeing and hearing really weird stuff." This is the story of the robbery from Zach's point of view, with some background history on his schizophrenia.
Leslie Fish is 12-years-old. She lives in Minnesota with her mother, father, and 15-year-old brother. Leslie goes to Plymouth Middle School. She also happens to have mental retardation, which means that it takes her longer to learn some things. Leslie tells what it's like to live and go to school with mental retardation.
