CeDIR Citings

Librarian's Word

Happy Disability Awareness Month! March is an exciting time around CeDIR, not only do we get the first taste of spring in southern Indiana (usually quickly followed by more snow) but we also get to go out and about and participate in some great events. This year we will be at two Disability Awareness fairs, and we’ll have a month-long exhibit in the lobby of the Wells Library.

Interested in visiting one of the fairs? You can see us on March 21st at the Disability Info Fair and Concert, hosted by the Down Syndrome Family Connection at the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church from 9:30 a.m. to noon; or stop by the Wells Library on March 26th between 9:00 and 4:00 to learn about disability services and resources on the Bloomington Campus at IU! Can’t make it to Bloomington? Drop by one of our ever-expanding online locations!

Book Review:

coverTurnball, H. R. (2003). Individuals with Disabilities Education Act as Amended in 2004. Boston: Pearson. (Call Number: 56.2 .T8)

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act as Amended in 2004 by H. Rutherford Turnbull, Nancy Huerta and Matthew Stowe is a great way to dive into understanding education laws with regard to children with disabilities. This book provides an in-depth look at what is going on in the government regarding education and children with disabilities and what you can do to get involved with the education system.

The book begins with a basic overview of the IDEIA, Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, and the six principles of the education system for children with disabilities that are later covered in the book. Each chapter afterward is dedicated to one principle. Each principle is then broken down into subcategories and described in detail, citing where each principle and cited work is from in the IDEIA. Each chapter begins with a basic review of the principle and then covers a wide variety of topics that are associated with that topic. The final chapter is dedicated to parent participation in the child’s education, which is highly stressed throughout all the chapters.

In addition to the breakdown of the principles, each chapter also contains detailed definitions of less-familiar terms and areas that state the significance of certain topics, giving the reader a more in-depth view of the law.
