Librarian's Word

October is a big month for disability awareness. Not only is it National Disability Employment Awareness Month, but also Down Syndrome Awareness Month and October 5-11 is Mental Illness Awareness Week. National recognition gives us an opportunity to make disability awareness a priority, but for most of us, disability awareness is a daily activity.

CeDIR has a variety of materials to help you develop and implement disability awarness events. Whether you are looking for a guide to designing and spreading the word about your event, or you need a childrens book that will help your child’s classmates better understand different abilities, we have what you’re looking for! For more information about disability awareness materials check out our Resource Guide on our website, or give us a call!

Website Review:
Job Accommodation Network (JAN)

In keeping with the theme of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, I wanted to provide a review of a resource I use frequently in my work for ADA-Indiana, the Job Accommodation Network’s website. The Job Accommodation Network introduced a redesigned website last month to celebrate their 25th Anniversary. The Job Accommodation Network, commonly known as JAN, is an organization funded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (the same agency that sponsors Disability Employment Awareness Month) to provide free assistance to individual and employers on disability-related workplace issues throughout the United States.

When a person arrives at the JAN website there are different options on how to access the numerous resources based on whether you are an employer or an individual, or looking for some ideas on how to accommodate a specific disability. An individual can easily find basic materials that are useful in getting an overview of the disability laws covering employment and their rights and responsibilities. The website also provides a variety of in-depth resources for individuals and employers as well.

I highly recommend JAN’s website as a starting point for any individual or employer interested in workplace accommodations.
