Resources on Coping

Since September 11, there has been much concern about the mental well being of individuals throughout the country. Numerous resources are available to help everyone, including people with disabilities, handle the recent tragedies. The National Organization on Disability has compiled a list titled "Resources to Help as the Nation Recovers." This list can direct people to a variety of resources on coping.

Below are two additional noteworthy sites:

  •  "Coping With Disaster: Suggestions for Helping Children With Cognitive Disabilities," developed by Anne Farrell, Ph.D., and Daniel Crimmins, Ph.D., of the Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD), a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY, can be found at http://www.acf.dhhs.gov/programs/add/Sept11/addcoping.html.
General resources and two developed for all children that are also worthy of mention are:

  • About Our Kids: Resources for Helping Children Cope with Trauma and Death" by NYU's Child Study Center. This web site contains many links to articles and other web sites with resources, including the FEMA resource listed below. These articles can be found on the web at
