ADA-Indiana celebrates the 21st Anniversary of the ADA with training event in Indianapolis

ADA-Indiana, the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities, and the Great Lakes ADA Center sponsored a training “from the source” for Indiana disability advocates on July 22nd, 2011.

In recognition of the 21st Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, ADA-Indiana welcomed more than 50 guests from state and local government, Centers for Independent Living, universities, and other disability organizations to their training event, "Making the ADA Work in Your Community.” Sally Conway, a Deputy Chief with the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, was the primary trainer for the event.

Making the ADA Work in Your Community Training Day

  • The Revised Regulations of Title II and Title III of the ADA
    Sally Conway provided an overview of the revised regulations for Title II and Title III of the ADA. (Print copies of the Revised Regulations for Title II and Title III were available at the event, courtesy of the Great Lakes ADA Center.)  
  • Olmstead: Community Integration for Everyone
    Ms. Conway reviewed the Supreme Court Decision, and informed guests of the Department of Justice’s recent litigation and technical assistance activities to implement the Olmstead decision. Karen Davis, Legal Services Director from Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services, spoke about Olmstead from an Indiana perspective.
  • Moderated Panel Discussion on Community Advocacy Projects
    In the afternoon, guests had the opportunity to listen and learn from a panel of advocates. The panelists described different approaches to advocacy that could be used in communities to insure accessibility, and promote compliance with the ADA.
