2001 Community ADA Implementation Project Grantees
ADA-Indiana's 2001 Grants were awarded to the following organizations.
ADA Accessible Playground Community Training The WILL Center (CIL) Terre Haute, IN
The Center provided two 3-hour training sessions to educate schools, churches and public parks about ADA requirements regulating playground design and construction. Their goal was to have at least 40 participants from five county-service areas attend (Vigo, Parke, Clay, Vermillion, and Putnam). Robin Jones was the invited speaker/trainer. The information packet included a copy of the proposed play area, a list of manufacturers and phone numbers, data on t he number of children who would benefit, a questionnaire, a request for info brochure, and ADA information.

Implementing ADA in Whitley County - First Steps/Step Ahead
The project hosted and conducted a community-wide luncheon to raise ADA awareness among businesses, manufacturers, local government officials, contractors, and churches. At the luncheon, they disseminated the results of previously conducted focus groups and to distribute ADA resources to help businesses be ADA-compliant. The presentation included an ADA checklist for public and private buildings. ADA rolodex card w/ADA contact information

Self-Advocates Promote Awareness and Compliance - The Arc of Hancock County
A Self-Advocate Committee sponsored by the Arc of Hancock County implemented an accessibility project. The Committee surveyed local businesses in Hancock County using the ADA Checklist for Readily Achievable Barrier Removal, offered recommendations, and presented a window sticker to businesses that were in compliance. Businesses in compliance also received a certificate.

Physicians ADA Survey - United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Indiana
UCP of Greater Indiana conducted a survey of Indiana’s physicians and developed a booklet listing physicians willing and able to provide basic healthcare to persons with disabilities. Also UCP provided every physician surveyed a checklist of “Quality Indicators” to increase their sensitivity to needs of patients with significant disabilities. The goal of the 11-question survey was to reach 4000 Indiana physicians and dentists

Rural Community Accessibility Seminars - Breaking New Ground at Purdue University
BNG disseminated information gathered from community accessibility assessments conducted in Benton, Fountain and Warren Counties through the Step Ahead Councils. The information was presented during luncheon seminars to leaders in the three counties. Handout packages included: County accessibility assessment report for the given counties, BNG video and brochure, BNG’s Indiana Directory of Disability Resources; ADA Guide to Small Towns; Questions and Answers about the ADA; ADA City and Governments: Common Problems; Commonly Asked Questions about Service Animals; and the BNG Outreach Program brochure and Resource List. The video, Improving Your Rural Business with the ADA was also shown during lunch.
