Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the ADA in Indianapolis

Dream Makers ADA-Indiana and the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities are hosting the State Celebration for the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Hoosiers from all over the State will gather in Indianapolis to join in the Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the ADA. There will be music, dancing, and refreshments. Plan to be a part of the historical moment, and best of all, plan to share it with your friends and colleagues.

Celebration Highlight: The Dream Makers from the Arc of Hancock County have become a Celebration Tradition! They performed at the 10th and 15th Anniversary, and we are excited that they are planning to return for the 20th Anniversary Celebration. You won't want to miss this exciting performance troupe!

What can you do? Plan to be there on Monday, July 26th for the big Celebration party!

Watch the ADA Stories from Indiana

Christine DahlbergAt the November Conference for People with Disabilities, hosted by the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities, the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community's Center for Aging and Community collected stories about the ADA from the perspective of Hoosiers. (By the way, we are not finish yet collecting stories. We hope to continue collecting stories up to, and even after the Celebration.)

There is a wide range of experiences featured in these stories, from early advocates recalling the years before and after the passage of the ADA, to new advocates talking about what the ADA means to them and their community.

The stories this month will feature Christine Dahlberg (from the Council), Ric Edwards (current chairperson of ADA-Indiana), Nancy Griffin, and Karen Vaughn. We think you will enjoy the stories about the early advocacy work for the ADA from a Hoosier perspective. Find out what they did before e-mail (yes, there was a time), hear about Justin Dart's visit to Indiana, and those infamous DREDF trainings that occurred in the years after the passage of the ADA.

What can you do? Enjoy the stories and share the link with friends.

Join the 2010 by 2010 Campaign

2010 by 2010The National ADA Symposium and the ADA National Network are inviting "state and local governments, schools and colleges, businesses, organizations, service providers, and advocates" to join in a "Proclamation of Recommitment" to the spirit of the ADA.

Now is a good time to ask your local city and county government officials to join in the Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the ADA by signing the Proclamation of Recommitment. Thanks to the City of Logansport, Cass County Government, and Peak Community Services for leading the way. In June, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities, and the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community signed on with their proclamation.

Visit our 2010 by 2010 webpage to find out more about the 2010 by 2010 Campaign.

What can you do? Ask your local governments to sign the Proclamation of Recommitment.
