Training Available on the Internet
There are several online training options to learn about and keep up to date on the Americans with Disabilities
Act. Some of these online training courses require the media software such as Real Player.
ADA-Indiana does not assume responsibility for the accuracy and accessibility of these online web courses. The web links provided below are for the convenience of individuals interested in the online training opportunities. However, many of these courses were developed under the guidance of the federal agencies that are charged with providing technical assistance and enforcement under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Introduction Courses
These courses offer a good introduction the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- ADA Basic Building Blocks - Spanish Version - Spanish version of the "ADA Basic Building Blocks" online course. An introductory webcourse on the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) that explores the legal requirements and spirit of the ADA.
- ADA Basic Building Blocks - This online course provides a basic overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The DBTACs maintain an archive of the Audio Conferences that have been offered for several years. The archive includes the audio portion, transcript, and supporting materials. The full archive can be accessed on their ADA Audio Conference page. The sessions are categorized by topic, speaker, and year. Below are archived sessions that have been recently recommended by ADA-Indiana as a learning tool and technical assistance.
- Webcast on Disaster Preparedness from the Independent Living Research Utilization (ILRU) - This webcast featured Lex Frieden. According to the announcement, the topic covered community responsibilities for disaster preparedness and emergency planning with regards to people with disabilities.
- Service Animals: Policy and Procedure from Great Lakes ADA Audio Conference Series - Transcript and Archive Audio available. Recorded on April 16, 2002. - What Makes A Meeting Accessible? (Audio Recording) - An archive of an audio conference session from DBTAC: Great Lakes ADA Center. The session was recorded in August, 2004. The session features June Isaacson Kailes on planning accessible meetings. Audio, Transcript, and Materials are available.
- Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities: Have we made progress? - An archive of an audio conference session from DBTAC: Great Lakes ADA Center. The session was recorded in December, 2004. The session features Elizabeth Davis, Emergency Preparedness Initiative, NOD. Audio, Transcript, and Materials are available.
There are a variety of online courses available at no cost. Some courses do require registration. This is a collection of courses that are self-paced and offered through the Internet. They range from a basic introduction to the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as courses designed for a specific audience or topic.
- The Disability Law Lowdown Podcast - The Disability Law Lowdown Podcast is an online audio program from the National Network of ADA Centers (the DBTACs). The podcast can be listened to from the webpage which includes the transcript, or you can subscribe to the Podcast series from the iTunes Store (just do a search for "Disability Law Lowdown".
- The Disability Law Lowdown has a new ASL Video Podcast on the Air Carriers Access Act - A new episode on the Air Carrier Access Act has been posted. The Disability Law Lowdown is hosted by the DBTAC's, the National Network of the ADA Centers. The podcasts can be downloaded at the website, or through iTunes.
- ADA Tutorial - Title II - A free online course developed by the DBTACs. The course cover the requirements under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- New E-Course: Introduction to Universal Design - This is a short online course developed by the National Center on Accessibility for park and recreation practitioners. The course is an introduction to the principles of Universal Design. The course is under "Accessibility" on parktraining.org website.
- Access Board's Online Training Course on Play Area Guidelines - "...explains how to apply and follow the guidelines for proper access. It covers the scope and application of the guidelines, including the number of play components required to be accessible, and technical provisions for accessible play equipment...."
- Introduction to Accessible Information Technology in Education Web Course - Free online course was developed by the AccessIT. "It is recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about information technology accessibility issues and related law and policy issues in education."
- At Your Service: Welcoming Customers with Disabilities - Web course on best practices for working with customers with disabilities.
- Access E-Learning - From Project GRADE: "A free,online ten-module tutorial that offers information, instructional techniques, and practice labs on how to make the most common needs in distance education accessible for individuals with disabilities...."
- Reaching Out to Customers with Disabilities - An online ADA course for businesses from the U.S. Department of Justice. The course covers policies and procedures, communitications, barrier removal and more.

- Disability Law Lowdown Podcast - The Disability Law Lowdown podcast is developed by Regional Disability Business Techical Assistance Centers. The episodes usually focus on a specific topic: Tax Incentives, HIV, Reasonable Accommodations. You can subcribe in iTunes or on the website.
