ADVOCACY AND GENERAL


The Disability Roundtable

The Roundtable is a coalition of individuals from the IUB campus who have interests in disability-related issues. Its mission is to promote the full participation of people with disabilities in the IU community. The Roundtable provides a forum for exchanging ideas and resources about disability-related topics and proactively supporting the University’s inclusion and accessibility policies.

Indiana Institute on Disability and Community

The Indiana Institute on Disability and Community is a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. It conducts research and training for schools, employment settings, and communities to promote a better quality of life for people with disabilities and their families.

The Institute is composed of seven Centers that address issues in disability across the life span:

    National Center on Accessibility (NCA)

    The National Center on Accessibility (NCA) is a collaborative program of Indiana University and the National Park Service. It is the nation’s premiere resource promoting access for people with disabilities in recreation. NCA focuses on universal design and practical accessibility solutions creating inclusive recreation opportunities for people of all abilities through research, technical assistance, and education.

    EDUCATIONAL ACCOMMODATIONS AND ASSISTANCE


    The Adaptive Technology Center (ATC)

    The Adaptive Technology Center (ATC) serves students, faculty, and staff with disabilities (either temporary or permanent). The Center specializes in technology-based solutions and tools to assist with writing, reading, studying, and information access.

    Disability Services for Students (DSS)

    This office assists students with a broad range of services and is responsible for determining reasonable academic accommodations for students with both physical and learning disabilities.

    The School of Continuing Studies (SCS)

    The School of Continuing Studies provides virtual education to high school and undergraduate students who need an alternative to the traditional classroom. Students choose from self-paced correspondence and online courses, and study from home in an environment that conforms to their learning styles and preferences. Students with documented disabilities can receive exam and instruction accommodations including extra time for exams, a reader and/or scribe, audio-taped exams, enlarged-print exams, and adaptive hardware and software.

    Speech and Hearing Science Clinics

    Staff of the hearing clinic assess hearing ability and also provide hearing aids and assistive listening devices. The speech and language clinic provides assessment and clinical services to persons with speech and language disorders. A Voice Clinic provides assessment and management for patients with voice disorders. The Aphasia Support Group provides support for individuals who have aphasia (impairment of ability to use or comprehend words).

    EMPLOYMENT ACCOMMODATIONS AND ASSISTANCE

    Accommodations for Staff

    The Office of Human Resources Services provides reasonable accommodations for applicants interested in staff positions with Indiana University. To receive an accommodation in applying for a staff position applicants must file an application with this campus Human Resources Office. This Office will also assist departments to accommodate someone applying for a departmental position.

    PHYSICAL ACCESS INFORMAION AND ASSISTANCE


    Physical Plant

    This department coordinates facility accessibility for the Bloomington campus. Staff can assist with designing alterations for accessibility in buildings or installation of appropriate signs for university owned or leased facilities.

    TELECOMMINICATIONS


    Indiana University offers telephone relay services without charge to individuals who use Telecommunication Devices for the Deaf (TDD). The main IU Bloomington TDD line is 812-855-7654. Please use this number for operator assistance in contacting a desired department.
