Questions about
Housing Assistance
and Work:
Q: What happens to
my
HUD
subsidy when I work?
A: Depending on what
type of HUD housing
your live in, and
whether you have
worked in the past
12 months, the HUD
Earned Income
Disregard is a work
incentive to support
tenants who become
employed to have
portions of their
new earned income
disregarded when HUD
calculates their
rent.
For individuals who
go to work, HUD will
not count earnings
in calculating rent
for the first year
of employment. In
the second year of
employment, only
half of earnings
will be counted in
calculating rental
payments. This work
incentive applies to
individuals living
in public housing
and certain other
types of HUD
housing, including
the Section 8
Housing Choice
Voucher Program (but
not project-based
Section 8), the
Supportive Housing
Program, the Home
Investment
Partnerships
Program, and the
Housing
Opportunities to
Persons with AIDS
Program.
Q: When do I have to
report my job and
wages to HUD?
A: As soon as you
begin working, you
should report your
earnings to HUD. Any
time your income
changes you should
report this to your
local Housing
Authority.
